I got a call from my apartment office saying they had a complaint from my neighbor about my loud alarm. Now this neighbor and I share a wall, but I keep my alarm away from the wall, on the other side of the room. I usually set it at 6.15 in the morning. My apartment manager wants me to either lower the volume, or not use it. However, the alarm has only two volume settings, and it's already low. Besides, I turn it off quickly every morning. Does this sound like a fair complaint? I don't hear any noise from the neighboring apartment, so had assumed that the walls were thick enough.

Is it a fair complaint?
It's a retarded complaint.

Why don't you nicely explain to the person in the office exactly what you've said here and ask them to kindly come up to your place and listen to the noise the alarm makes. If necessary, suggest they get permission to go into the neighbor's apartment to listen to the alarm from there and determine whether or not it's too loud. Tell them you're more than happy to use an alarm which doesn't upset the neighbor as long as the neighbor pays for it but that you have to have an alarm to get up for work as if you get fired for tardiness you won't be able to pay the rent.

I had a loud alarm at one time that would wake the entire house... I put a pillow over it and it worked for me...

Get a new alarm close that has a different sound / not as loud. They are typically under $10.

Keep the peace. Poor person is probably being woke up early and cannot get back to sleep. They probably didn't want to report it but could no longer deal with it. It's not their fault the walls are thik and the bedrooms are back-to-back.

Just think of it as a nice old grandma that is being woke up too early and doesnt feel well the whole day because of this.

Something as little as an alarm clock will solve it all.

You don't have to do this, but wouldn't it be a nice guesture and so easy and cheap to do it? And Kharma will come back to you in a good way soon.

^^ Just to clarify, the alarm I use is already a clock/radio/beeping alarm type (not a cell phone).

Honestly, I would hate to be woken up every day at 6am because of my neighbors. These are the kind of details that make your living spaces so stressful.

They just need to deal.. If you live an apartment there are times that your gonna hear things you dont want to hear no matter how well constructed they might be. Ive lived in numerous apartments and have heard people above me messing around, loudish music, domestic violence and yeah I called the cops cause it woke me up and scared the crap out of me. Anyways it happens and its every day life...

Yes it is a fair complaint. Imagine if they had an alarm that went off an hour before yours and it woke you every day. Try setting your alarm on radio. My guess is there is something about the noise frequency of your existing alarm that penetrates the wall particularly well. A song may not penetrate at all. Then after you set it and go a few days ask your neighbor if they are hearing it. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness.
