Mail boxes are owned by the Post Office. We have several gang mail boxes and one was hit by a vehicle and the mounting post was slightly bent. In order to have it repaired, we had to contact the PO, who sent out a person to empty all the mail from the boxes and post an out of order sign on the box. Then we were required to have a PO authorized repair service do the repair work. We were not allowed to find just anyone to do the repairs.
Once repaired, we had to again contact the PO who inspected the box and returned it to service.
We purchased and owned the gang box, but once in service you MUST follow PO guidelines or face big trouble.

On occasion the letter carrier will report broken or tampered-with mail boxes...

In the interim... the carrier has the discretion... so I have been told, to return all the mail to the station or leave it with on-site building management.

When you think about... just about every large business that rents office space usually has a single delivery point... as does the local hospital that leases office space to Doctors... each day, M-F the postman drops off a large box with all the days mail at the front desk... in house mail room staff separates each piece of mail into the appropriate box and marks for return to sender mis-delivered mail...

Nothing sinister about it.

As others have mentioned... a P.O. Box is the way to go for maximum security and timely delivery.

Thank you for your reply. I will be calling the Post Office today. Our manager wouldn't explain anything, she acted like it was none of my business. She said she had posted the notice and that I should go read it. Thx again.

Thank you all for responding and your comments. To answer some of your questions: I was not home during 'business hours' on Saturday to pick up my mail. I couldn't ask because the office was closed and there is no emergency number. But the office was open Sunday to collect rent so I did ask. I was told the notice states all that I needed to know. Our manager doesn't feel the need to answer questions. But, I'll find out when I call the post office today. California law requires apartment landlords/management to have lockable mailboxes for each unit. Tenants are entitled to expect their mail to be IN their mailbox and to collect it at their convenience, not the managers. Mgmt is required to give written notice regarding changes &/or new rules. These people play by their own rules. I am disabled and live on a fixed income which makes moving difficult for me, otherwise I would. Thank you again, I appreciate your input. Have a great day!

Most likely they will be repairing &/or replacing the mail boxes. The mail situation just happened to follow other unfortunate events. If only you knew

Poor Customer Service impacts the bottom line... especially at management level where a simple explanation would have sufficed and been appreciated.

Judging by his last post he seems for some reason disgruntled with the responses he received and doesn't want to play in our sandbox any more.
