Same as you get a reference from an employer. You ask the LL if you can use him as a reference and then give his contact information to the prospective new landlord.

Try to get them to give you something in writing that states the time you lived there, the number of times the rent was late, the number of bounced checks, the number of notices to rent or quit. NOT saying that you have any of this, but if you get the LL to put in writing details of all of this, it should work. LLs can be suspicious of something in writing, or even a call, as a LL will sometimes lie to get rid of a bad tenant. But if you can get what I mentioned in writing, it usually looks good to a new LL.
You may or may not get the LL to give you the info.
I've never done anything special. Rental applications ask for the last place I lived, I write it down. They take care of the rest. It's not like applying for a job where you need to present letters of recommendation. They are most concerned with whether or not you have been evicted or sued by former landlords and they have their own methods of checking that.
I used to pay with checks years ago but since May of 2011 I been paying online
Then you have no problem. In any case, if your LL agrees to give you a reference then it's hardly likely he's going to turn around and lie about the fact that your rent has been paid. Don't look for difficulties where difficulties don't exist. Better to expend your energy on finding a place which you afford and which suits you rather than conjuring up wild "what if's". This is not complicated.
