This post is super old, but since it was bumped, if anyone sees it, the best way to fix those holes is to use drywall mud in the holes, then when dry take a damp sponge and wipe down. This will keep the existing texture from benign sanded down and looking bad.
OP did take pic in post 12 ... this was back in 2013 so problem has been resolved I am sure
