Yeah, it's just one of those moving-related expenses you have to budget for.
The good news is that it increases the likelihood you'll get back as much of your security deposit as possible (the extra time to really deep clean).
I'm going to be paying an extra 2-4 weeks depending on when I close, but I don't want to deal with my LL showing my place in the middle of my having inspections, etc. Better to waste a few weeks rent and not be stressed out! I'll let my LL know 30 days beforehand, because the second he knows, he'll be advertising.
If you want your security deposit returned, It's going to take a week to clean your old apartment, you've been livng there for 10 years. No way will you be able to return the key to your current landlord and tell him it's ready for inspection by 5/31.

Yeah, you might be able to extend your current lease for a few days, at a prorated rate. When I moved into my new place, I overlapped my old lease for about a week so I ad plenty of time to have the new condo painted, floors refinished, and clean the old place after moving. It made the move so much less stressful.
You probably don't need a full extra week, but 1-2 days might help give you some breathing room. I don't know what your monthly rent is, but if its $900 a month, that would prorate to $30/day, so $60 for 2 extra days.
This might not be do-able this late in the game; your old landlord may have someone lined up to move in soon, and have painters/cleaners scheduled. But, you might want to remember this in case you move agin in a few years, when you give notice, try to tack on a few prorated days if possible.
Just got off the phone with the landlord and I was told it will be $30 a day for each day after 5/31. So as of now it's looking like I may be at the cuurent place until 6/3 or 6/4 due to
1. The other place needing to be cleaned and ready for me
2. Delivery of new furniturne

Now you need to call the new LL and ask if your unit can be painted by 6/4.
