basically a 3 day *notice* for rent increase (5/29, 5/30, 5/31)

"California law guarantees you at least 30 days' advance written notice of a rent increase if you have a month-to-month (or shorter) periodic rental agreement."

I agree with Beth56; I'm virtually certain your landlord is in the wrong.

No. Plus, if the rent increase is for over 10% you have to get 60 days notice in CA.

If you're on a lease, the rent can't be increased until the lease expires.

I've had my rent raised without notice. When I mailed in the usual amount, the LL called to say the check is $10 short. Implied: either pay the higher rent/shortage amount now or get evicted.

If they did not give proper notce as required by your state laws, they can not evict you. Had they attempted an eviction and the Judge ruled in your favor, you may have grounds for a retalitory eviction claim going forward.
