Sounds like your fiance is kind of a pain. You were okay with it, he didn't bother to go look at it with you, and now he's complaining and wants out of the deal? Red flag here, honey. Been there. I think you need to not only rethink the lease, but maybe the fiance, too.

Just wanted to give an update that I was able to break the lease and receive all of our money back. We dodged a bullet. We have so learned our lesson.

Glad to hear it had a happy ending!

Back when I rented, I always brought tape measures with me to measure rooms and do rough calculations of square footage, when I was apartment hunting. More than once, a prospective landlord suddenly would blurt out "I think the ad was wrong, it's actually 800 square feet, not 1100!" when I started measuring. It also helped to guarantee I could fit specific furniture items, etc.

They do this all the time, hoping no one will notice. The OP is really lucky the landlord was willing to cancel the lease.

Just curious. Did they admit is was smaller or did you actually measure it?

How do you measure a room? I get the floor in living room is 14 ft x 14 ft but some places go by area...adding wall height. CONFUSING!!

They did not admit to it and they still won't. My fiance measure the place and drew out a floor plan with the dimensions of each space. At best it was about 600sq ft altogether. I think the 1000sq ft was the property mangers adding in the square footage from next door since this place is a duplex.

I definitely will be bringing a tape measure with me from now on.
