Any help would be greatly appreciated! First, I have great credit and no criminal background and now have a permanent job offer (with a letter and contact info) and months of pay stubs. I have only had positive rental experiences. But the problem is I do not maintain an actual residence presently. The job I just left was contractual and they pay a per diem so yes, I have been living in hotels and short term suites for close to a year.

How in the world do I document this on the standard Texas Apartment Association Application? It asks for the address on my driver's license!! My driver's license address is a relative's address (an apartment) so that I could collect mail/tax info/etc. If I list what's on my license do they actually call a property manager? I would be scared my relative's rental company would get a call and incorrectly assume that I'm living there with him! Sheesh!

Believe me, I hated my work situation but my options were pretty much non-existant and now I'm worried I can't even get an apartment because of it!

I don't see why you can't write a letter of explanation. And I assume you have the contact numbers of former landlords for reference checks, the most recent one especially. Receipts from the suites could show your story is true and an employer check would verify the rest.

Thank you for your response!

I think I like your letter idea!! This application only has space for your current address and ONE other address and I can provide more previous addresses.

Why don't you use your last address that you had leased/owned to yourself. And tell whomever at where you are applying to rent that you stayed with relatives since then? They don't need to know all the details to rent.

I'd like to! This application starts off with "Current Home Address (Where You Live Now)" with spaces for current manger/owner, their phone number, and date range.

They also have spaces for my weight and hair color... :crickets: I can guarantee neither the hair color nor weight listed on my driver's license is real! Every.single.complex I've encountered uses this Association's form!

Could you just type out a letter of explanation and staple it to the application?

If I was looking at your application, I would prefer the hotel references to relatives. Relative references aren't acceptable for me.

Just tell the truth. Write in between the lines, add an extra piece of paper. There's nothing wrong with your true story.

Are you serious about the form asking for your weight and hair color? That's...

I would stick with the truth, because it should be easy for them to call your employer to verify, as opposed to telling them you stayed with the relative, which will get you into trouble when they call the LL to verify.

We have this happen a lot...What you do is put your driver's license address on the top portion where it asks for it.
Then in the space that asks for current address...put where you truly live...even if it is in a hotel/motel.

I know with us where I work, if someone is a first time renter, has lived over seas, lives with family etc we can verify that if we truly have to. As long as you have good credit, no criminal background, etc according to their screen criteria you should be fine. It may just require an additional deposit.

I am always more appreciative when my applicants are truthful with me on EVERYTHING so we know how to meet their needs and we don't have anything unexpected pop up in our screening process. Just give the leasing agent the heads up and they will let you know what to put down.

PS...If you are not on the lease at your relatives and they try to verify rental there at the apt complex they live in, the office where they live can only put "not on lease". It happens alot. so don't stress over it.
