Why not? Do you have something to hide? The more questions you ask, the better the tenant you're likely to get.

Why wouldn't I talk to your boss? You gonna put down only your best friends as references? Get those glowing tenant references. I already know the references I'm gonna get from your friends

I agree with that sentiment, but annoying someone's boss is not appropriate. People don't need or want to be answering calls and such all the time about their employees personal business. Knowing someone has a job and is making however much monthly covers that, without talking to their boss.

Verifying employment is one thing...completely understandable and expected....but that was not what you first posted.

I would not put my employer down as a reference....and no employer should be willing to give more than a verification that they are employed there.

How is contacting someone's boss annoying? To you it's annoying and embarrassing, but to your boss it's probably something he's already dealt with.

Your employer isn't your 'reference' he's your proof you actually have the job you claim you have. Ppl lie on applications all the time...nothing wrong with verifying your employment.

The portion about checking an arrest record (not a criminal record) has to border on illegal. I know that employers can't legally look at an arrest record.

Landlords can. I also used to google people. It's amazing what you can find on google.

It's public record and open to everyone and anyone to read...my county has them all listed online, by last name for free. Not illegal at all.
