Thanks for all the replies to my last post. Now my problem is that I couldn't sleep because of a thudding noise that almost sounds like bass, but it could also be someone in the kitchen. The neighbors from last night are now quiet (I originally thought it could have been them again, but it wasn't) Only problem is, there is a strong urine smell associated with the thudding. This is new, but the thudding isn't. I think it's coming from my upstairs apartment neighbor but I'm not sure. Their light was on at 2:30am. I'm seriously thinking about moving if these kinds of disturbances continue to keep on happening. I know at least three people in the same building own cats but wouldn't that smell last longer and smell differently? The apartment room next to me is owned by the LandLord's daughter and my parents are very good friends with them. The thudding noise is almost rhythmic and in beats of two or three every 2-3 seconds, but I don't think it's the plumbing. Maintenance checked all the valves and hoses a few days ago and the AC unit was checked as was the water heater. I'm also smelling the odor but barely even with the windows open.

If the apartment management won't do anything you need to move elsewhere.

How unnerving. I would freak out by a creepy noise and urine smell. The only way to be sure is to knock on all your neighbor's doors (that you suspect) to see whats going on.

If it happens again, I will consider talking to management here. I'm seriously ready to move. Downstairs neighbor bangs in the evenings as does my upper left neighbor. My right neighbor bangs in the morning like at 7am. I wonder if she's getting upset about my phone alarm. But I wouldn't think that would be the reason for her banging. The urine Smell finally has vanished. Stomped on the floor really hard on my neighbor's ceiling for continuing to slam the door beneath me. It felt good. She's doing the banging again! (neighbor on left) Seriously. No urine smell. Thank God.

I would suggest moving. You may want to check the rental section of the forum as they discuss this type of situation frequently. Basically, renters do not have many rights, and if you don't like the situation, the only option is usually to move.

I'd also suggest checking this out >http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/l...k/catenant.pdf

good luck!

Urine smell is ammonia, and there are things that smell bad and you think its pee but its ammonia.. like a certain kind of cleaner or a certain kind of dirty wet dishrag. so maybe it has to do with that, or maybe theres a leaky pipe from the bathroom. or maybe someone is peeing outside in the grass by your window. or maybe they washed some peed on items in the laundry and you are smelling it… or maybe they peed in the hallway.

Sounds like your issue is with the construction of your building and not your neighbors. If your neighbor can hear your alarm and then yes, you're going to hear them open and close their door, run the shower, flush the toilet and all sorts of daily living noise.

If you can't handle hearing people live, then move.
