If it's the kind of filter that just screws onto the faucet, I would tell the landlord to remove it. If you want to buy your own, you can put it on yourself and then take it with you when you leave if you want. If it's a built in system of some sort, then subject to your lease's specific terms, you should not be responsible for replacement of a fixture that broke if you were not responsible for it breaking.

I am also in the column of WTF? I can see responsibility of replacing the filter cartridge on the tenant, but the filter unit itself is part of the apartment provided equipment and is the landlord's responsibility unless it can be demonstrated that the tenant's neglect or abuse caused the failure. Normal wear and tear is always on the landlord unless explicitly otherwise in the lease.

I think the filter cartridge would be like light bulbs or laundry soap. It is a consumable and should be the responsibility of the consumer.

The big question is how much fight is $45 worth in your life? I would side with you, but the fight to get to my decision would still be there in our system.

Thanks everyone for your response and good advise. We just ended up paying the $45 dollars. We were told it was our responsibility (which I understand.......But not the whole unit!) and so we dropped it. To much of a hassle and then there's karma
