My daughter signed a lease for an apartment close to the university she's about to go, but the co signer back out for her student loan so, she cannot go to college anymore. I signed as a guarantor for the lease. The landlord said my daughter is responsible but we can't pay for the rent because she's not going to occupy it. And besides, I cannot afford to pay it too. What can we do about it?

Watch as your credit tanks. You need to notify the apartment ASAP and pay rent until they find a replacement tenant. Could be a while since school will be out for the summer.

There is an important lesson here. Never cosign for things you can't afford to pay for. You signed a contract, so you are on the hook for the payments.

Read the lease and see if it gives a procedure for breaking the lease. If it does, pay the lease break fee and be done with it.

You are not going to be walking away from this scot free. You made a mistake in signing for something you can't afford, and now you are going to pay for your mistake.

(The kid couldn't get Pell grants or scholarships to make up the difference of not getting the loans?)
