I'm looking for an inexpensive area to relocate. Me and my wife are both self employed working over the Internet so job is not a problem. We are looking for a place off the beaten track that is inexpensive so we can save up for a small farm. Here are some requirements:
- Decent internet access (could use satellite in a pinch)
- Small house, trailer, or small apartment.
- Small town, rural area, forest cabin, etc.
- Prefer moderate climate
- Prefer West Coast but will consider other areas as well
- Could be a place at a small farm; could trade-in work hours and get some experience as well
Looking for any ideas. Searching all the small towns one by one is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
We are looking for reasonable accommodations at rock bottom prices. Being able to afford the place is not an issue just want to be able to save all we can.

Make up your mind which of those two you want to have.

Doable. And almost anywhere in the US.

Land is expensive in California, but off the beaten path is the biggest criteria, then I'd suggest some of the foothill or rural farmland in the central San Joaquin valley. For starters, I'd suggest Springville, Porterville, or possibly Oakdale/Modesto area. Also, I friend of my lives in Acton, near Antelope Valley & loves it.
Throw out the west coast preference and you could move here and be my neighbor.
There are rentals or inexpensive houses to buy with land. Can you come up with $2-3K? Buy a house with land right now on the outskirts of the nearby "city" so you'd still be able to get cable - satellite is a bummer - we hate it. Of course, moving from a T1 to satellite is like travelling cross country by private jet to using a skateboard.
Moderate climate
rural definitely
completely off the beaten track
here is southwest TN 2 hours east of Memphis. It's working out fantastic for us - we retired here 2 years ago from NYC.
How hugely vague... if you want "west coast", I would start by placing ads in all the papers that go from Blaine, WA down to San Diego, CA. You can also try placing those same ads on CL by county along that same route.
If the goal is a small farm, you are going to have a difficult time affording anything resembling farm-able land on the west coast. Water is too much of an issue and land with water rights is high priced.
I suggest that you settle somewhere in Appalachia and that gives you a chance to really study that area and learn where the good farm land is located and learn prices and the local culture. There are good places there to homestead for reasonable prices.
All good ideas, thank you very much!!! Got lots to think about.
