The same LL that will be giving a reccomendation to the next LL.

Exactly. I would invest that $15 for a fan to keep the peace personally for two months. If he wasn't renewing and staying another year, then most definitely would insist on the landlord to fix the fan or tell the neighbors to suck it up.

If the fan is noisy and causing issues, it's the landlord's responsibility to correct it unless you installed it yourself.

You have every right to keep yourself comfortable in a warm environment if you have no A/C.

And if that $15 fan somehow shorts out and causes a fire, you will be liable.
Get him to do His job.
You don't live there rent free, do you?

He's gone in 2 months. He wants his security deposit back. Sometimes, you gotta lose a battle to win the war. And sometimes, just getting on with life is the best choice.

Good luck to the OP and best wishes that your next home is more comfortable than this one!

She*

Thanks for all the advice. I asked the landlord to come check out the fan since it's apparently so loud. He did and didn't see any way to make it less loud (it is noisy on my side just a smidge but in a white noise sort of way... but the traffic on our city street is even noisier and more random... I really have no idea how it could be bothering these neighbors so much. The previous tenants never said a word about it.). So he went and bought a window box AC to put on the second floor... almost tried to just dump it on me to install on my own until I was like, "Um, can YOU do this maybe?"

Then lectured me about the yard being out of control (because the neighbor's side is super long since I haven't mowed it ever since that one incident), to which I explained what had happened and pointed out that I mow my side, which looks totally fine, every week, but he didn't seem to really comment on that other than, "I'll have to talk to them about their side then."

Kind of annoyed with this guy just as much as the neighbors but hey, I'm gone soon. Fortunately, I don't have to worry about any next landlord because I've already been approved for a very nice apartment that's got great reviews and am signing the lease on that tomorrow, so yay. I am definitely concerned with the security deposit on this place though, which was kind of high (a full month's rent) because it's a century old house and this guy seems so cheap and lazy that I have no idea what kind of shenanigans he'll pull. I know these things can be taken up in small claims court but who wants to deal with that drama?

I'd run the attic fan til 10....and use a fan in my room at night for comfort. I don't understand sweltering in a bedroom when floor fans are pretty reasonable.
Attic fans are not meant to keep you cool...they are meant to air out the hot air in an attic. Since you don't sleep in the attic, it isn't going to cool you off like a floor fan pointed at you would...Plus....the noise from the floor fan will keep you from hearing the 6 am heel noise from your neighbors side. Win, Win.
EDIT: OP we were posting at the same time....Glad he got you a window air conditioner. Good that you pointed out the yard issue is their side and responsibility. Good luck on your new apartment.

Weird, the whole time I've lived here, I thought it was for the sake of keeping the whole house a bit cooler... since that was what the landlord claimed it was capable of and a little bit of looking around online seems to corroborate that story that it can be used for that purpose.

The heel noise doesn't really bother me at this point... I bought a white noise machine a couple of months ago (because of the street noise) and coincidentally it tends to mostly drown out their stomping round in the AM. I only mentioned it because it really does paint them as slightly hypocritical if they're going to complain about noises. Some people here have suggested mentioning it to my landlord, but I don't really see the point either way... that's just one of those things you deal with when you live in shared living spaces. As long as they're not throwing wild out of control parties or blaring music at 3AM, I'm happy just keeping the peace.

The story in this original post is very familiar.

Oh well, run the fan, don't mow the lawn, leave in two months like you planned, tell the landlord you expect written documentation regarding any complaints in the future.

If/when the girls come and ask for a favor tell them no, not to bother you again, close the door.
