I signed a new one year lease 1, Apr 2015

and the following month my Apt building was sold. The new owners are redoing all the apts with upgrades
The Apt Mgr told be I will be getting a letter to move out by 1, Sept so they can upgrade it and rent it out
for more money, is this legal? I thought a Lease is a contract

I'm in San Antonio,TX

You shouldn't have signed on April Fools day

Just kidding , good luck.

I think they can ask you to leave and tell you to leave, but I think the new owner has to abide by the lease.

Almost certainly not legal, with very, very few exceptions.

Until you actually get the letter though, I wouldn't worry about it.

Nope. Not legal. Tell him if he wants you out in September, he'll have to buy out your contract - cash for keys.

When they bought the property, they also bought your contract and have to honor it. They're bluffing.

Here is a TX law source. Scroll down to the "plain English" section:

Pro Se Resources - Landlord/Tenant Law - LibGuides at Texas State Law Library

And if they decide to start doing major renovations in the unit while you're still in there, ask for rent abatements for every day you can't enjoy living in your home, as well as whining about them encroaching on your right to quiet enjoyment of the property. They'll probably decide to leave you alone until next April if you just make it a pain for them to harass you. It's called "constructive eviction," too, when they try to make you so miserable you just leave.
