Yes, going by the laws in the vast majority of jurisdictions, you would be well within your rights to do the first part of your post.
An airplane however is a space owned by a private company, and you agree to their contract of carriage when you purchase your ticket. They are free to tell you that you are not allowed to wear green nail polish or wear shirts with the letter Q printed on them, and it's perfectly legal. Any other private business owner can do the same, assuming they aren't discriminating based on any protected class.
