As as landlord, are you comfortable with your tenants having a garbage disposal unit in their sink? I realize these are common in the US, 50% of households have them as opposed to 5% Canadian households.
A tenant has asked me for one and I am concerned about the safety aspect for children, and noxious fumes. Needing others' opinions, thanks!
It's no more dangerous than having electric outlets, glass windows, etc... Just leave them a pamphlet on how to use it properly to avoid having them trying to jam objects down that don't belong.

Do you have one in your home?
The reasons to NOT have one are that they invite things being run down the drain
that really shouldn't be, the related risk of pipe blockages, the extra water use,
and the service/repair issues.

IMHO, at a certain price point an apartment better have one or I'll look elsewhere. It's a convenience to be sure, but it's one I use a LOT.

I do have one - I'm one of the 5% in Canada who does. It's the first time I've had one and it took me 2 years to use it without my stomach churning with anxiety. All I could think about was mangled body parts. So I wonder if my own fears are a big part of my resistance.
But I am dealing with an American tenant market - and need some perspective.
I have NEVER seen a house or apartment in my entire life that doesn't have a garbage disposal.
They're not dangerous, just don't reach inside while they are switched on. If something get stuck (it happens) make sure the switch is off before you put your hand in. Or use tongs. If you are really freaked out, turn off the circuit breaker. Or get hubby to do it. Or if you're a man, get wifey to do it! Tell her you'll kill the next spider.
