I was hoping I could get a quick answer on if my landlord can make me pay for repairs. 2 nights ago the outlet to the dryer caught fire, luckily i was there when it happened, turned the power to the house off, and got it unplugged. I called the landlord over the next day to look at it and hopefully repair it so i can do my laundry. After he looked at it and assessed it he said some water was getting in which got into the outlet causing it to catch fire and burn up not only the outlet but my dryer cord. He explained the parts he would need to fix it, then told me to let him know after i have them and he will install it all for me!? I was so confused at that point then he explained in the lease it says theres a 100$ spending allowance for repairs and maintenance of the property and unless I go over $100 then he doesn't need to pay for it, and I cant take it from rent. I thought this meant like the fact that I replaced the kitchen and living room floors, not something like this that should be completely his responsibility! I have done a lot of work to this house I'm living in, in a very short amount of time also, and I ask him to fix an electrical issue on his part, and suddenly ALL repairs are my problems. That's not what the Lease states either, it says to alert him if there is a need for Major repairs. In my eyes, an electrical repair is considered Major because it could cause a fire and it deals directly with the safety of this home. Not to mention It blew up my dryer, he should be lucky i'm not asking him to replace that too. Anyway, can he really make me pay for this repair? It's not something I can afford at the moment unless I could take from rent, but he said I can't. Washing and drying clothes in a need for me, I have 2 small children, so this isn't something that can wait. Thanks in advance for any advice.

How was the water getting in the outlet? Leaking pipe or leaking connection?
If it's leaking pipe his problem his cause. If it's leaking connection or drain hose you caused it,

Assuming it's not your hoses or drain that caused the issue I would read your lease especially the section on repairs and responsibilities for repairs.
Unless the lease specifically has a clause that directs you to do all repairs under $100, he can't force you to do it or pay for it. I would pull out your copy and ask for him to point out the section where that cover repairs up to $100 is written in.

If it's your fault you should cover the expenses of the repairs. My question is why are you doing improvements to his property?
