Can I have a nest style streaming cam inside my apartment looking at door entrance from inside? I live in Chicago. Would ask my landlord but was looking at one this weekend and want to by but can wait until Monday and ask if I have to.

I am asking because I rent apartment so not sure if there are any rules for renters.

The only thing I can think of is if you plan to mount it with screws into the wall and your lease says you cant put screws in the wall.

I don't see why not. You'd have the right to sit in your apartment and take photos of your door entrance.

And I agree with the above poster. But, you can always just repair any damage done by screws in the walls or let them charge you for any damage. But, I do agree, I can't think of any other reason why you couldn't. As long as you weren't breaking any other laws - like Peeping Tom intrusions, etc.

Video only as IL is an all party consent state and you don't want to be inadvertently recording conversations.

No need to ask your landlord. No need to get permission. It's your space.

If you are doing this because you think your LL makes unauthorized entries into your apartment or just for security, make sure you put it where nobody can see it.

FYI - Chicago has it's own landlord tenant statute.

As well as the state law:

Thank you what is the reasoning for putting where no one could see . I thought if they see it would scare them and they would leave if someone broke in for example.

I was almost gonna get a fake one that you could see when you walk in .

If it has to do with the consent I would hide but then can you use in police report if something happens.

Cameras are no longer the deterrent they once were. They're as common as car alarms were in the 90's. Most crooks know to put a mask on.

If you're worried about the landlord coming in, just put the camera there and see if you get any alerts. Consent is most likely not required for a security setup. If that were the case, surveillance cameras would be nowhere.

In the case of a Nest, you don't need to hide it. If it were a camera with an on-site storage then you'd want to hide the cameras a bit so the the storage doesn't get stolen.

Put it on a table and call it a day. I'm 99% sure you don't need to get anyone's permission for this.

I cant see any issues with a security camera in your apartment if you are the only one living there. Roommates might change the situation.

The only other issue I can think of is if you have the camera inside pointed at the door because you are leaving the door open to tape something outside. Just because your camera is indoors does not make it legal to stalk the woman across the way.

If you damage the walls in any way, expect to get repairs taken out of your security deposit and don't sign any sort of long term monitoring contract. Your security will have to leave when you move out.
