I am doing a paper on renting apartments to people who has a criminal record. I am doing a poll on do you think its right to discriminate those who has done their time. Their working hard everyday on a job but can't get an apartment beccause they have a felony record. Please give me your opinion on this topic.
My opinion is that society gave them a chance to play by the rules but they decided otherwise.
Not going to be the second chump who trusted these dirtbags.
I understand everyone's fears on this. I want to live in a safe neighborhood. Today the country is infested with crime. Prisons are big business and big employers. Many people are imprisoned for things they wouldn't have done hard time for years ago. Once in prison they are often forced into more crime that goes on their record. This is not a black or white situation, as some of the posters seem to think. I would look at the person's record, and what the charge was before they were imprisoned, circumstances around the initial charge, and so on. Remember this: one of the major reasons for the high rate of return to prison is that many are released with not enough money for a place, and are unable to get any job. It is be homeless or be back in prison. Crime is something that needs way more consideration than our society is giving it. It is not going to go away untill we look at it as the cultural/social environmental problem that it really is.

Oh, Boo Hoo! Let them join the military, or go find a god or something. You're just making excuses.
well i turned 19 years old in lake county jail & has been convicted of a felony for burgulary & now my parents are moving outta state in 2 months & they told me i cant move with them so i dont think they should judge me because of this felony cause it does not define me . it was jus a mistake that i see is qoint to follow me for tha rest of my life.

Why shouldn't you be judged for your own actions....people judge me for my actions...non are criminal, but that is how day to day life works...stop whining and blaming others...isn't that part of the sentence. Denial isn't helping you.
The severity of the crime acts as a definite way of measuring if they are allowed to rent. Also, check the person's records and see if he's repeated crimes done in the past and is usually stepping in and out of jail.
well heres my story every where i go no one wants to rent me because of my criminal background i have the charges of conspiracy to arm robbery and robbery buisness/other place my situations is complicated they droped it down to conspiracy to common law robbery but it sucks because no matter how good you are no one cares they just see a record kinda sad im single mom of 2 children and only reason i was charged because i asked for a ride unknowing they just had robed a store so its very difficult to try move anywhere i had to live out of hotels for a while then moved in with my mom and now the apartments want to kick her out because of my record even though they see i dont do anything and rent is always payed on time ... =/ advice?

Being a landlord and determining who to lease your property to can be dicey. Its very hard to know the social history of applicants and who they hang with can sooo impact your property. Years ago my divorced stepdaughter reconciled with her husband .... a young guy who had stolen things and had served time in county jail. She did not advise her landlord of this situation and soon the ex was staying over all the time so they decided to break the lease and move to a place with more space. Later I found out that they sold the appliances (fridge, stove, OTC microwave) from her apartment to "recoup" the security deposit they knew she'd lose by moving out and breaking the lease. I think about this poor LL any time I have a place up for rent. I really do like it when my potential applicants bring their friends along to see the place b/c it gives me a sense of them. You need to do your diligence, but you are always vulnerable as a LL ..... felony records or not of your applicants. Its part of the game. You need to use your business head; and sometimes it is not bad business to rent to a reformed felon BTW...
