I feel I should add....don't mess with a con artist. Don't mess with a guy's con. Especially the old style guy that does it one on one, face to face, hand to hand. This means don't mess with his money. Just go along as usual, pack so quietly the other tenants don't realize it (this guy doesn't like anything behind his back) and when you are ready to leave, thank him for the opportunity for housing, and ask if a month's notice is okay. He probably won't say get out right now because, hey, he can get another month's rent. If not, you're ready. Still be respectful. Be on your way and be wiser for it next time.

I don't think this is a landlord tenant relationship. At least not any sort of normal one. OP is living in an apartment with three other (unrelated?) people and paying rent to a fellow who lives across the hall. It's an odd set-up.

Yes, OP should insist upon a receipt, because the landlord ( or whatever he is.) is acting hinky. OP needs to protect himself against false accusations of late or no pay.

Normally, tenants pay in some way that provides proof of payment. If this landlord, or super, or maintenance man, or squatter, or whatever he is, wants cash, he needs to provide a receipt. And he won't have a receipt book. OP is going to have to invest $2 in a small receipt book.
