Section 8 is newly build/converted condos, townhomes with a GARAGE and BACKYARD.
a new bill has been passed here and millions of dollars are going to be spend to build more section 8 homes! I might hop on the band wagon why the hell not?!
there has already been a project of new townhomes being finished now!!! also section 8. I see it everyday on my way to work. Im seriously thinking about getting fired or layed off so i can go back and live on section 8 instead of the dump i live in now!
Yep. My mom worked for the redevelopment assocation in my city. They built awesome new townhouses that a normal person would have to pay $200,000+ to buy. But, they were given to Section 8 families for $30,000. Damn...I wish I could buy a brand new home for $30,000.
It all makes you not want to support myself. I could make more money off of welfare if I just stopped giving a **** and popped out a few bastard kids. I'd get Medicaid, subsidized housing and food stamps.
Hey, I paid taxes on those freebies for along time, and I still pay rent where I live and your attitude is pretty rude, and maybe you should try living in a rat infested, crime infested apartment and see how well we all live on section 8. How do you spell SNOB?
How do you spell 'ungrateful'?
I was raised as poorest of the poor trailer-park white trash. My mom worked her butt off at two to three jobs at a time to keep clothes on the backs of me and my siblings. As young as age four I have memories of all us kids going with her at night to clean offices and a bank, and working at that age emptying trash cans and wiping out toilets and sinks.
I remember my little brother getting beat up pretty regularly for having to wear hand me down clothes from his two older sisters. Our school clothes shopping consisted of going to the local thrift store and my mom having maybe $20 to outfit all three of us for the school year. I never had a single new piece of clothes to wear until I started working a real job at age 14.
And I remember very well being very thankful for the occasional government cheese and butter handouts. I don't have any memories of my mom complaining that it wasn't good cheese and that she deserved better. We didn't get subsidized housing or foodstamps, either. I also had the determination and the pride in myself to work my way out of my upbringing, so I really have no pity for anyone that complains about getting government handouts.
Sorry. You have it way good compared to most of the world and you still complain.
Good for you. I had to get off this thread for a few days, as I hate the stereotypes. Unfortunately, such is life in America. It is a disgrace to be disabled, poor, ill, or otherwise not rich. Trust and believe that receiving section 8 is not so easy as people think. There are strict rules and frankly I have never seen anyone driving in a mercedes or otherwide. Just because you are using section 8 does not mean you are a lesser human being or a lazy person and it does not mean you will use it forever. I am shocked at the judgemental people out there. Yes there are always some idiots who will milk the system, but is not that in any system, workplace, etc? I mean are the poor people in the Gulf now losers because they are accepting Govt asst? This country is really annoying me with this snotty attitude. Also what about our 10% unemployment? What the F are people supposed to eat? There are people who used to have good jobs on Food Stamps etc. They are not less of a human being. I hate the way people in this country define themselves by a job. Judge not less ye be judged. A disaster may just strike you too.

I think you have identified part of the problem in a previous post where you mentioned your unit has several deficiencies and yet, the Government keeps paying every month even though you have made those responsible aware...
It only takes a few to give a program a bad name and couple this with the problems associated in getting approved for assistance and you have a recipe for resentment.
I personally know families... speaking about several generations of the same family where assistance is the only way of life they know... not everyone is disabled, frail or elderly... often, the cycle continues only because there is a new child born to a single teenage mother...
I believe, as county, Americans are very giving and willing to help... they just don't like the waste that is associated with so much of what the goverment does...
For 40 years, my Grandmother volunteered at the Salvation Army Booth Home for unwed mothers... she always said that could have easily been her... Private programs like this have extremely low overhead and do so much with the resources available...

I do understand what your saying, as there is a mindset some have on section 8. I guess it is because I am new to it and really am on it due to medical issues and no family to help me. I am trying to not stay on it, as it is a lot of work as you have read what I wrote before. I appreciate the help believe me. I cannot imagine living like that forever. I see what you mean about it being a cycle as there is a lot of that in the public housing and sec 8. The thing is that the Govt are trying to have more programs and educational/self sufficiency help with the housing programs and even inside the complexes now. They also have some new requirements and actually do evict a lot more people now than before for drug use and other abuses. Some of these people are, excuse me for being rude, but uneducated and really do not have any desire to be, so they just repeat the cycle. I know two people on disability that are on sec 8 and it is a different story as they need it to live. I also have seen where a woman will allow her boyfriend and his kids etc live there, but usually this will be found out sooner or later. It is not fair to people like me and others who are only trying to live. I also see that with food stamps, but I do not receive them. I actually saw a woman in the store using three different cards! She had ones for her other family members. As you said the Salvation Army is a great organization and your Mom did a great thing. They have helped me in the past. I just wish people would not think that these programs are so easy and comfortable because they are not. They may be for a select few, but really it is more work than you think.
Where are these homes? I wish I could find a sec 8 that nice. Also there are long waiting lists for sec 8, so how did your friends get this. I have no kids, but yes it is true that if you have kids you will get it first and medicaid. I do not have medicaid I have medicare and pay $100 a month for it plus $35 copays and medicine etc. I pay $200 plus electric and heat for a dump. I have to pay phone, bus, medical, cable, food etc. I get $800 mo. I do not know where you live but unemployment does not pay a lot and if he has only $900 a month with kids and $400 for rent and other bills, that is very hard living. I would say try it and then judge.
I know several communities in the Bay Area with new homes that accept Section 8... most are 3 bedroom units... so the family size must be a minimum of 1 adult and 3 dependants to qualify....
At one time, Section here required separate bedrooms for boys and girls... there was a lawsuit and now housing goes by number of people... so a mom with a son and daughter would now qualify for a two bedroom and no longer a 3.
Alameda Alliance is the biggest medical provider in my county for low income... the problem is finding doctors that will accept it... those that do are generally not taking new patients.
The goal of Section 8 is to mainstream those receiving housing assistance throughout a community... Vouchers allow those receiving assistance portability across the country and are no longer limited to the jurisdiction where assistance was granted.
Rent, by Statute, cannot exceed the fair market value for comparable units in the area and then, in my areas, the rent must meet a standard compared to a percentage of similar units.
I've managed several very nice single family homes where Section 8 tenants have applied and went through the inspection process... the homes always passed Housing Quality Standards, but the rent was judged too high...
In other words... there were plenty of 3 bedroom units in my city for $900 a month... 3 bedroom homes in my neighborhood were renting for $1500 and housing would not approve the requested rent... in all cases, I rented the units to non-section 8 families at the requested rent and several for more... because I had lowered the rent in consideration that a portion would be paid directly by the Housing Authority.
Basically, a unit either meets Housing Quality Standards or it doesn't. The owner is given so many days to bring the unit into compliance with a possibility of one extension for extenuating circumstances and that's it.
There are a lot of quality units now available because the supply has increased dramatically... maybe, it is different in other geographic locations?
I think you are right about the geographic locations. I am in D.C. in Northern Virginia in Alexandria, VA. (Voted the Virginia City with the Highest Income in the State) Believe me there are no apts like that in this particular city for section 8,although they did tear down the old projects located near 3 million dollar homes in Old Town Alexandria. The rich people here are fighting another affordable housing corp for renovating two older apt buildings near their million dollar homes. ARHA did build new apts for the moved families, but I hear they are not yet complete. The apts that accept sec 8 accepts, which are few, are not all bad, but alot are not good, accept the one I have is pretty bad and I too was amazed it passed. It barely passed. I guess that is why they have portability. Also the problem is that our city ARHA a part of HUD has been in a lot of trouble and has been audited by HUD for grant mismanagement. They also cannot keep a director. They have terrible inspectors, and the last time they fired one of the execs for stealing narcotics from a former tenants belongings after she died. She had to sort out the belongings and for some reason got caught by putting the meds in her desk! Then they found them. They are now in a mess with people for mismanaging the new apartments built and moving people erratically etc. I have had four counselors in one year! The inspector in my apt totally passed the apt without the stove even working!
Anyone know the rules and restrictions for Section 8 people?
A section 8 person lives in next to a condo I own in Montgomery County. These people have a $120,000 fully customized Mercedes-Benz and living off welfare. Makes me sick, but I've grown accustomed to looking the other way. These people have fancy cars, expensive clothes, $500 sunglasses yet can't speak a coherent sentence.
Well, I am a rabid animal lover (no pun intended) and I just found out my Section 8 neighbors have decided to breed pit bulls. They bought 2 for $1,500 EACH and now they want to make more. I have nothing against pit-bulls, but one trip to PG humane society will tell you just how many dogs are put to sleep because of irresponsible and ignorant breeders like this a$$hole.
Anyhow, I'm so disgusted right now. What can I do to get these people out of here?
Something illegal is going on there. Where I live, to get onto a Section 8 voucher, a person can't make over 30% of the average income of the area, and after being on it awhile, not over 50%. Call the Section 8 number in your area and report a suspected case of Section 8 abuse. Sounds as those the people are raising pitbulls for dog fights. You will be doing not only yourself, but the Section 8 Program a favor by reporting those con artists.
In Hawaii, we have an annual review, and it is expected that all assets be declared, so they may not be declaring the Mercedes-Benz. Also, if it is discovered that they have a criminal history that is violent or drug related, they will be terminated. I think a person can only have about $2,000 in a bank account and I'm not sure how the asset of a car, even an old, second hand one is counted, but it is.
People who really need Section 8 are living on a shoestring budget, and look it. Many of my neighbors are Section 8, hard-working, but dress in clothes from Ross or Wal-Mart or a rare find of something nice from Goodwill. Anyone on Section 8 and driving a Benz, wearing designer clothes, is up to no good.
Just maybe........they recieved the car as a gift to help them out. You dont know anyones situation and to prejudge just isnt right IMO!!
In my state, Hawaii, you must declare all gifts, money over a certain amount, computers, and certainly a Benz!! That is considered income. The $112,000 Benz alone would knock them off Section 8, in Hawaii, anyway.
I usually defend Section 8, but not if it is being abused. That doesn't work for anyone, a taxpayer and/or recipient.
