I caused a minor (1/2-1 inch deep, aroundkneecap-sized) hole in the wall in my apartment by slipping. Is it best to fix it myself, because it looks like it can be fixed with spackle and paint, or tell maintenance?

I know people who have done both. I guess it depends on the management company. If they're a good company and you have a good relationship with them, I'd suggest telling them. If not, or you think they might pull one over you or something, maybe then I'd fix it myself. Depends on the situation I guess. Are you about to move out? Then I'd try to do it myself.

It's a simple fix if you know what you are doing.

Two weeks ago I fixed something similar for one of my tenants... no charge.

I'll go out on a limb and say fix it yourself if you are sure it won't have to be redone...

The easiest way I know is to stuff the hole with wadded newspapers and then mix enough "Fix-all" to almost fill the hole and let set. I always leave the hole slightly concave and finish with topping compound, textured to match and spot prime with Behr PVA primer sealer... then just paint to match.

Since you caused the damage, if you report it, you'll probably have to pay for the repairs. If you're fairly handy, fix it yourself. Otherwise, have them fix it or hire a handyman to do it.

He is right, they will end up charging you. If you know you can repair it to look as though it was never there, then do it. Just ask for touch up paint, they will provide that for free (usually)
