That's apartment living and I know it's difficult but what can the office do about walking or stomping around a apartment? It's not music blasted or kids screaming during quiet time. I live in a 3rd floor apartment until I find a house. Recently I adopted a lab. She is getting heavy and she likes to jump. Her jumps can be pretty loud but I try to keep her as quiet as my kids are but it can be difficult to watch every move and sound you make in a apartment. My apartment walls are so thin. I can heard my neighbors complete conversation at night when I'm trying to sleep.

My first experience with apt living left a lasting impression to say the least. I lived below a heavy woman who paced the floor all night long nightly above me and I ended having to turn up the tv in my bedroom loud and drown her out to get any sleep, something which has stayed with me over 20 years, several apts, a marriage, a great house, and a divorce later. So I tried the friendly notes under the door, to which she basically replied to me that it was my fault for living under her and just deal with it, then talking to the management, etc, and yet she continued like clockwork.. So finding myself back in apt living albeit temporarily, I've devised a simple solution, because as much as I understand there is noise with everyday living, I also believe just because I live in an apt, I shouldn't have to give up all sense of peace and quiet or endure your heavy footed walking, moving and dropping things on the floor above me all day and night. Anyway, as part of the divorce I kept my home theater system which is extremely beyond what the average apt dweller would probably own. So the upstairs neighbor who was here at the time I moved in, was heavy, and of course, walked heavy, however he settled down rather quickly generally, and it appears he would travel alot so he wasn't home continuously. But on those occasions when he was being excessively loud, I simply turned up the HT system a bit and things would again quiet down as I'm sure he got the hint. Now he's moved and been replaced by an older woman, equally heavy and apparently a grandma as the three kids from what looks to be age 4-7 have been over a few times, and have been allowed to run back and forth and play in grandma's new abode without seemingly any consideration that someone lives below, but a little music from below with the subwoofer turned up, seems to have had the desired effect so far. I never turn up my system loud as normal practice, but I honestly don't believe in hitting ceilings with broom handles and confrontation rarely works in most cases, or for any length of time at least, so I take the "mutual assured annoyance" approach, we can either respect each other or annoy each other, but see, loud music and movies don't bother me because I love hearing them anyway, so if it drowns out your heavy walking or noise above me, its not really an inconvenience for me, and that's the conversation we'll have should you ever choose to knock on my door too... Everyone has a responsibility to be as considerate and quiet as possible when living in close quarters regardless of who lives above, below, or next to who....

^^^ if you tried that garbage here, you'd be out on your arse. The cops would come and give you one warning. If they come again for the same complaint, you get a ticket. If they come a third time for the same complaint, you get a ticket and so does the complex. When the complex gets a ticket, you get a notice to vacate for violating your lease.

So..while you think it's funny to boom your bass because your neighbor walks to heavy for you, don't be surprised when you find yourself out on the street. Walking is not covered under "quiet enjoyment" booming music, however, is.

Well, I'm not worried about finding myself out on my "arse" on the street thank you very much @ Kim in FL. And I'm not where you are so I really don't care what is defined under "quiet enjoyment", because MY quiet enjoyment is not hearing kids running around and jumping above me, nor constant booms and heavy walking because some people fail to realize or ignore that they're floor is someone else's ceiling. Secondly where did I say I found it funny? Quite the opposite in fact, and I go out of my way to NOT boom my bass as you call it, however bottom line is, with the complete understanding of reasonable sounds living, yet the realization that most people do not care how loud they are, especially above you, because I don't believe for a second, they don't realize they live above someone, so I pay enough money to not have to hear someone's kids or heavy footed walking trouncing across my ceiling or whatever happens to cause loud booms and crashes above me that damn near make me jump out of my seat or wakes me in the middle of the night, so you can defend the right to walk, jump and stomp all you want, I also have the right to reasonable peace and quiet.

You have no clue what 'quite enjoyment' means and I suggest you read up on the topic.

Being able to hear footsteps and noise overhead is very common in apartments, especially with wooden floors.

The people above do not even need to be especially heavy and are not necessarily "stomping" around --- they're moving around their apartment just as anyone does.

It's not reasonable to expect people in apartments to tip-toe in their own apartment or god forbid condo. Nor does anyone have any right to limit how a neighbour lives--- some people are going to be active at night. What if someone works in a bar, and comes home at 4 a.m. Are they not allowed to make a meal or take a shower?

I would advise before you rent a place (or buy a condo) you try to visit it in the evening when a lot of people are home, and listen to see if you will find overhead noise objectionable.

Yet it's acceptable for some Noise Factory on Legs to limit how I live just because I have the misfortune of living beneath him, her, or it? PLEASE!!!

a partial solution to those nasty wood floors is simple carpeting. it wont eliminate the sound completely but it can make a fairly dramatic improvment.

where i live is mandatory for a there to be carpeted areas in a specific square footage of wood flooring because of this very issue.

It sucks to be too poor to own four walls that adjoin no one. I am in a war of wills at the moment with the upstairs neighbor whose cat crashes around all night and all weekend when they are away. I worked 9 hours the holiday that the cat went nuts from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m.. obviously it was not happy about being left alone for 2 or 3 days straight. Neglectful pet owners suck.

I worked 10 hours today and work 10 tomorrow, but tonight I opened a bottle of wine and set up for a night of banging cabinent doors shut, dropping loud boxes, and rolling a loud cart across the floor every 25 minutes or so. I can now hear the couple upstairs talking urgently every time I slam the bathroom door. Yeah, maybe now is a good time for them to wake up and realize that the Golden Rule applies to all.
