Right, and I said that it wouldn't get them very far, but would let management see that they upset her. Trust me, as a business, the last thing you want is someone complaining the the Better Business Bureau. I know this because I do this for a living, work in the apartment industry and have been in it for years working with many management companies.

Well, thanks, all. I think I am going to just let this one blow over. I don't want to incriminate myself by putting anything on record that they can use against me, frankly. It's two people against me in heresay, so I don't want them to start making stuff up if I continue to harp on the issue. My super said he spoke to the woman who yelled at me and he chalked it up to her being in the moment and it not being personal, that's she's over it. I still feel very threatened, but I'm willing to let it go so long as it doesn't happen again and she doesn't try to use it against me in the future. But I'll be moving as soon as possible, I don't want to deal with this **** anymore. Luckily there IS a guy here right now fixing the stuff. Well he's fixing the ceiling that was caused by these same guys over 3 weeks ago, and I'm praying he won't call it quits before he gets to the REAL issue of the closet.

Thanks for the nice words everyone and for not being too harsh. YOU all know how to act like civilized people! Yay.

You're a better person than me, knowing that I was leaving, I would do it anyways! Good luck!

Fine, I said, but I have class today, and I don't want them here when I am not here, so can they do it later? I really have to go to class and I can't have them come right now. He said hold on, I'll find out and be right back.

Three minutes later my phone rings and it's the SECRETARY at the management company. She says they need access to my apartment, and I ask, in a calm voice, if should could please explain to me what it is they need to do, and how much time they would need. SHE starts yelling at me, saying that I MUST let them in, etc, that I have no rights, that if I don't let them in I should start looking for a new apartment. She hands me over to the "managing agent," who is the woman I've dealt with in all my leasing issues. SHE starts screaming at me saying I can be evicted, that she is at the moment drawing up a legal letter of some sort, etc.

I don't know at what point during the conversation they informed me that it was an EMERGENCY, but I can promise you that my super did not say such a thing. He made no note of emergency, and I know I have a legal right to refuse entrance and reschedule if it is NOT an emergency. I know that I have NO legal rights in an emergency. But they did not inform me that it was, so then they proceeded to harass me, threatening eviction (I don't know that THAT is legal, sure haven't read anything saying it is) and generally making me feel unsafe and like my management company was against me.

Then I cried.

Then I called them back (after I was hung up on) and calmly said to the secretary that I was fine with letting them in, but I didn't know it was an emergency and I really wish she wouldn't yell at me. She started yelling again, and I told her she made me cry. "I MADE YOU CRY! I MADE YOU CRY! YOU'RE FREAKING GONNA MAKE ME CRY, HERE!" then she hands me over to the managing agent again and I say listen, there is no issue here, I just wish you wouldn't have yelled at me and you'd let me explain what happened (which she NEVER did), and she said she had no time to deal with me, etc, hung up again.

I just feel like I was unreasonably harassed. Granted, this was not bad at all compared to what some people go through, but I have been calling number after number (civil rights, attorney general, etc) and I can't get anyone to talk to me. It's just not fair that they can threaten me like that without any reason. I don't know if it's even legal to threaten eviction regardless of emergency, but the point is it's not like I threw myself in front of my door while a fire was brewing in my room, refusing entry. The super asked if they could come and I said that I'd be in class. Then the head construction guy came down and was SO nonchalant, acting like there was NO emergency, said, oh I'll give you some time, how about I come back in a half an hour. Right. The way the management was yelling at me, you'd think the whole building was going to be flooding. But no. It was not even a big deal to them. I think they even made up that it was an emergency when in fact it wasn't.

So what should I do? I really wished I could have resolved this with them at the management company, but they seem SO angry at me for no reason, when we had a great relationship before. Maybe it'll blow over to them, but I don't think it's fair that I am treated like this and it goes unnoticed. I don't really want to take them to COURT, but are there any other options?

Thanks, sorry it was so long.
Your first mistake was telling these dummies they made you cry. You never, ever want to give someone that kind of power over your emotions! (or if they do have power over your emotions - you don't want them to know that!) Secondly, you probably won't find a lawyer to take a case like this because at this point you have not been evicted or served with an eviction notice. Once you're served, then contact a lawyer and they will talk to you. But be advised this is not a case a lawyer would take on a contingency or pro bono. You will have to come up with money for a retainer.

I don't know about you guys but I read the apartment reviews online before I move, and read the comments people make about their apt management. There are several and I would give some feedback on what happened to you. You don't have to worry about anything you are saying backfiring. People write their opinions in there pretty freely. If I read your statement in a review that would give me a red flag. Maybe you can save others, and also make yourself feel better by writing it......!!!

Well the yelling is pretty stupid of them. But many apartments contracts allow them to enter your apartment to make repairs even if it involves another apartment. If t was a pipe then it might even be emrgency;hard to tell. Look at your contract and state laws to see. This is because often time getting a plumber to come back is very expensive and the repair to assure a functioning apartment complex makes it necessary. If it were only your apartment affected that would be different.Wait until you get your own home and have to be there at the plumbers convenience.

Yeah, good call on just sucking it up.

I would blast that place on the internet though.

But don't let them know you did that until you get your security deposit back.

Apartment Ratings - Apartments for Rent with Ratings and Reviews from Actual Renters

Is a good place to start.

Then search for your complex on google maps. You should find then you can review it from there.

Let the world know how bad they suck. If you can cost them a few good tenants I would say you got yours Passive-aggressive is fun :P

Go to this web site, make up a phony name and say exactly what they did.

Of course, they will know it was you. They can't prove it was you.

I wrote up a great piece for my apartments (using my real name) and when I went to pay my rent they were all like "HEY! Thanks for the great write up!" That web site gets checked A LOT.

At least, you have done something to gain a bit of control over your situation. Heck, use your real name. They made you feel bad. Hit 'em where it hurts.

Also, your apartment is probably owned by a large coorporation. I'd give them a call...and let them know that shoddy management is going to be costing them money and paying tenants. Explain what happened and see what comes of it.

Seriously, it works.

And this is a wonderful idea for apartment communities, but the OP lives in NYC and apartments are different there. Guarentee they are not listed on apartment ratings.
