neighbor parking on street question
just moved to a new state; therefore a new neighborhood. The neighborhood has sidewalks and every home has at least a single but most a double car garage. The person directly across the street from me doesn't use his garage for parking and seems to have like 5-6 cars including a van. The van he parks right in front of my house and I mean RIGHT in front. Sometimes pulls right up to the edge of my driveway. Yesterday I had scheduled Direct TV to come out and well of course the van is where MY guest should park so my guest had to park back a bit, putting him almost in front of the guy next door to me.
Does anyone know if the area in front of one's house is considered public parking? Would common courtesy prevail and one would assume the area of road in front of one's house is parking for THAT house? And does anyone know where I can find city ordinance about this?
I don't want trouble right from the get go with a neighbor; I don't want neighbor trouble at all but apparently they don't care. They have to know parking there would annoy us.
Also I heard a car and voices a few nights ago and there was another car parked in front of my house and a person standing on the sidewalk in front smoking (something) so I opened the door to look at them. Person got back in the car after tossing smoking debris in my yard. Then someone came out of the house across the street, got in that car and left.

contact city hall or local police for the information. Some cities have restrictions on curbside parking

Street parking = public parking. Anyone can park on the street. You can't do anything about it. People have a right to park on the street - as long as they are not blocking your driveway.

The street is public parking. Unless your in a sub-division or town that prohibits overnight street parking, your stuck with it. Maybe discussing it with the neighbor will start a relationship and understanding. I always tell people to talk first. Take a beer over ( or ice tea)and chat about the hood and what is expected of you, and find out the scope of the hood. Your the newbie, so act as if you want to fit in and go by the already established rules and try to make some new rules about parking.
Might work, might not. It's worth a try. Does he have any classic cars or toys that would create an interest for you too?

In our city parking closer than 2 feet to the edge of a driveway is illegal. Check with the local authorities there.
You can't stop pigs with a garage full of garbage and a half dozen junkers from parking in front of your house. It's unfortunate that you have to live around people like this, but they are everywhere.
When you know someone is coming and if the area is open park there until they come and then go out and move your car so they get the spot.

Depending on where you live, some cities and towns have regulations against curbside parking in certain areas. If I had a garage I'd keep it clean so I could park inside to keep the vehicles clean and protected from weather, birds, vandals, and thieves.

your guests park wherever they can find a space...just like everyone else....unless you are in an HOA controlled area, MOST city laws allow for on-street parking.....

In reality... there isn't much you can do except move if the issue bothers you that much.
Most public streets provide for 72 hour parking for properly licensed vehicles.
My brother had a similar situation when he bought his first home. The neighbor had a one car garage and owned 5 cars... my brother decided to ask his friends to park for 72 hours at a time on the street whenever the neighbor moved one of his cars.
After two weeks, the neighbor came over and said he had no where to park and asked if my brother could move his car. They agreed not to park in front of each other's homes and actually became friends over the 4 years he lived there.

I dunno if I would appreciate another neighbor telling me where I can park, unless Im in their driveway. Ultrarunners idea, is actually a great one! You arent confronting them, you are kinda reversing the situation on the neighbor. Who would probably be more open, if he undestood the inconvenience that it has brought upon you.
