There's three people in a 2 bedroom apartment - one person has their own room. Should they:

(a) split the rent equally, or
(b) charge per bedroom. (the person with a whole room should pay half the rent.)

Thanks!

Split equally . . . your rent is based on cost per sq. foot. You all use the living space, utilities, kitchen, and sleeping space, so all should share equally in the cost. Also, one paying more, or less, can lead to resentment and . . . fill in the blank.

Pretty much equal. Actually, the two sharing the room are getting certain amenities that the single person isn't. Unless... Nah, best to keep it equal. Also, come to an agreement on what happens when one decides to move out. It gets really problematic then. If you work out each scenerio and run your house like a business, it takes the stress off.

That should have come up and been resolved before move in...!
If you started out as two people, then one moves in a g/f, they should pay more.

At one time I lived in a two bedroom apartment with my sister and then her boyfriend moved in. So, I had one room and the two shared the other. I thought it was unfair for me to pay half the rent and utilities since there were three of us, I mean, he lived there and used everything too, not just the one room. In the end, we decided that we would split it three ways and all worked out.

In my 4 bedroom house, we had 5 people living there. I generally rented by the bedroom and added on an additional $100 to the rent if you were to share the room. We split all utilities by the # of people living there, though. I calculated rent by the size of the bedrooms and the average cost of renting a room (which I got from craigslist and newspapers for my area)I also knocked down my rent a bit because I was the one in charge of utilities (which meant I was hunting people down collecting utility and rent money). It worked out pretty well.
