Give your notice to the LL ASAP and tell him/her that you'd like to move sooner, if possible.

If you LL can get another tenant to move in, say on Dec. 15th, you'd only have to pay through Dec 14th.

He cannot collect rent from both you and the new tenant. You might also help him find a new Tenant by talking to your friends, coworkers, putting an ad on craigslist, etc.

In every lease I've ever had, the notice periods were spelled out very well - have you checked the language in your lease?

My experience has always been that I had to give either 30 or 60 days notice and that the period began as of the first of the following month. So if I had to give 60 days notice and had given it November 3rd, I was responsible for the rent through the end of January .... because technically, and according to the terms of my lease, the period started at the first of the following month, which would be December 1st. Had I given notice on October 31, I would only be responsible through the end of December.

BUT, it is not uncommon for LLs to pro-rate, especially when it's only a matter of a few days. Best thing to do is ask - worst they can do is say no :-)
