Default giving rent notice

This is probably a silly question, but I am renting for the first time and don't know how it all works, and I don't want to rip off my landlord or be ripped off.
A place just came available that would be ideal for me, I can move in December 1st.
I paid last months rent and a deposit, (half a months rent), when I first moved in here.
I have a month by month contract, and have to give two months notice.
Does that mean I will have to pay rent for January as well if I give notice tomorrow? (November 3rd)

Sounds like you'd only be responsible for 3 days in January.

Even with a Month to month contract, having something in writing can make things much easier in the long run, should any confusion come up. something to cover both Parties, but nothing to formal. Just spell out things like what you just brought up. No point in finding out the hard way, when it is to late. Make sure to get, and keep any receipts, just in case.

What is the wording in your lease agreement? 30 days from the 1st of the month is usually the minimum by law. So i think you should be ok as long as you give the two months, as long as its worded that way in the lease

Why do you have last months rent and not first months rent? Are you sure about what you paid...Most people pay sec. deposit and first months...that already can become an issue...

The LL will probably prorate for the 3 days in January.
If the LL wanted to do things by the book,
legally, Notice given on Nov 3 wouldn't begin until Dec 1,
You'd owe rent through the entire month of January.

The beginning of rent period notice only applies to the minimum 30 days required by law correct? Otherwise any extra would just be what the OP and landlord agreed too, I would think.

No.
In a private LLs world they can bend the rules, if they wanted to go by the legalities
of their state, ordinarily, a Nov 3 notice would begin Dec 1.
