I am on the market to rent a house and when I do the google search I get bombarded with numerous sites that offer links to other sites and so on.
Is there a reputable website anybody can recommend that would make the search process simple and will offer a variety of options?

I always use Craigslist, Rent.com, Rentlinx.com, smarthomerentals.com and you can use your local realtor office if you need to have property management taken care off and they will rent it out too.

I'm a little scared of some of the management companies since i already had a couple of times that they are doing things that legally are risky. Like contacting me for references of prior of present tenants without showing me proof of a release form to do background checks and when i asked for the paper they told me they didn't have one since tenants applied online...but for a LL it is illegal to give private information without consent of the tenant, so be careful.

That depends on what was asked for on a reference.

Confirming dates and amounts and a simple "Would you rent to this person again" I think are acceptable without paperwork. I never ask for it, either when requesting the information or when giving it. If the person wants more detailed information than that, then yes, I require a release.

Go onto the state forum or the classified ad section. This forum is for addressing basic landlord tenant issues not for finding rentals. Good luck.

Zillow and Craigslist will get you about 90% of rental listings maybe more. Redfin, Trulia and the rest are like Zillow. You can also hire an agent to do a search, less likely and could be more expensive.
