I always loved the 69 Grand Marquis. My in laws had one and rarely would they let anybody drive it. I got the chance once and fell in love. The ride was like driving on air. Lots of power on hand and exceptionally quiet too. Loved the styling. I looked for one for several years in near new shape but could never find one that didn't need full restoration or was grossly over priced.
I've never noticed the resemblance of the Mercury Parklane taillights being similar to those of a Cadillac, Of the 1969-78 Marquis's I've always considered 1971 to be my favorite year with 1969 and 1970 being close behind due to the styling and the powertrain
Consumer Reports top rated the Marquis both for 1972 and 1973. the gas mileage for the 72 was atrocious --7-15 in normal driving with 11 mpg on a 300 mile trip. the 73 was slightly better
I like the 68 much better than the 69...to me the 69 looks too large and bloated...whereas the 68, and earlier just seem a bit more stylish. But on a side note, back in the late 80's while in college I had a 69 Cougar, to me the 69 Cougars look much better than the 68 Cougars.....due to the larger size.

I always find it interesting that the 1969 Marquis is bloated on the outside but not on the inside due to its strong powertrain (that is something you can't say for vehicles built a few years afterwards).
also wasn't the 1969 Mercury Marquis closer to the Lincoln Continental in terms of luxury compared to the 1968 Mercury Park Lane?
