GM has been trying to sell off Saab for a while now. We'll have to see if bankruptcy protection will finally make it more attractive for someone to pick up the brand, but in this market I wouldn't be surprised to see Saab disappear altogether, especially since the Swedish government has declined to offer any bailout assistance to the brand. These are some dark times for the automotive industry.

That's pretty much true. The Swedish government thinks GM should finance Saab's $1 billion request, GM wants to give no more than $400 million, and Saab can't make it on their own. Color Saab "gone".

Another Saab story in these tough economic times.

I'm getting really tired of hearing the phrase: "these tough economic times".

the 9-2x was such a silly concept that only GM could have dreamt it up.

From my understanding the Swedish Government is barred by law to prop up Saab.

On a side note this is a little sad because I hope that Volvo doesn't enter into the same fate.

Especially the really old ones that were 2-cycle...like a weed whacker!

Hey, doesn't Saab also make jet fighter planes? I don't think GM has anything to do with that part of it though. Good thing, I sure wouldn't want to be way up in the sky in something made by GM!

Ford is in a much better position than GM so they don't have to use last-resort methods such as bankruptcy to cast off Volvo. If the market keeps up like this for too long, it might be a different story. But for now, even though Ford is shopping Volvo around, they're not desperate to get rid of it.
