What activities do posters here participate in to stay active with others? Do you belong to organizations, do you do volunteer work, etc.? About how much time during the week do you contribute to it, and do you think that is enough to keep you engaged with others outside the home?
Because I moved to a new state, I got involved pretty quickly. I live in a 55+ community, so there was a lot for me to choose from. I am in a ceramics club that meets twice a week and I've signed up to load the kiln once a week. I also joined a card club and play cards three times a week. And I volunteer at the local hospital once a week. I'm thinking about taking a yoga class a couple of times a week too. The rest of my time has been spent house-hunting and it looks like the end is in sight, with a tentative closing date this month. I have a friend who enjoys going to plays and concerts and have been to about two a month since I arrived in Nevada. This mix of activities, along with the usual home-based activities and some travel, keeps me happily occupied but not over-scheduled. I've met lots of great people and feel very much at home.

A quick side track with apologies to KiwiKate.
How is Henderson? We are looking at a number of areas for retirement and LV is on the list. I am always hunting for first hand opinions, especially from people new to an area.
To answer the OP. I have not been overly socially active since I retired this summer, but it was expected.
I am hoping to start some volunteer work next spring. I am looking at Habitat for Humanity as a start (I love building things) and there are a lot of other options available.

I'm loving it. I also did quite a search before moving from the Midwest. Love the weather here and Sun City Anthem is everything I hoped it would be. Also on my list was easy access to a major airport, a hospital close by, lower cost of living, no state income tax and affordable housing. Though I lost money on my home in WI, I am buying a better house here for the same price. It was a toss-up for me between being near the ocean and having mountain views. My short list was just north of Tampa (Heritage Springs) and here, and I decided that the low humidity here was more to my liking. And I love waking up in the morning to see the beautiful mountains that surround the Las Vegas valley. Couldn't be happier.

Yeah, isn't that wonderful? When most (if not all) people think of Las Vegas, the only thing that comes to mind is the Strip. Many do not even realize that LV is in a valley with mountains all around. For those who are interested, here are a couple of links that demonstrate the natural beauty of this area.

Twice a week for nine months a year, I run a middle school chess club during the lunch hour. The enthusiasm of the kids is its own reward. (This is a very enthusiastic age). I have been doing this for five years now and I find it very rewarding.
Last spring I started something new at a different school nearby. I read once a week to a fifth-grade class - The Call of the Wild by Jack London. I wasn't sure how much I would like this, as the school district gently twisted my arm to try it, but it was really fun. I may have been just lucky to have been matched up with a great teacher and a great class, but I will soon be returning to that same school and teacher, who now has different students, of course.
Schools can almost always use volunteers, and some districts have a central office devoted to screening and placing volunteers from the community. Given today's realities, just realize that you will have to jump through some hoops, such as getting fingerprinted.

Good for you! Some of the happiest years of my life were when my kids were younger and I spent MANY hours volunteering in their schools. I've always felt that middle school teachers were a special breed...to say that these kids are "enthusiastic" is an understatement. This is such a transitional period in their lives, and the people who work with this age group in a successful way seem to possess a sense of humor and tons of patience.
I think that spending time with the younger generation helps to keep our minds "young". And as Bette said in another thread, we really CAN learn from each other. As an example, in our office when a little computer glitch comes up, who do we baby boomers consult with before we call the IT guys? Our 20-something co-workers!
(P.S. Kudos to the rest of you who are putting in time as volunteers. There are so many problems and needs in this world today, and I can't even imagine how things would be without all the people who spend their precious time volunteering. Thanks!)
