One does not need to be a 'crab all one's life' in order to be serious when it counts. The article points out that a little bit of seriousness about life goes a long way in finding longevity.

According to this, I will kick the bucket any minute now. I'm a mess....and still cheerful to boot.

Agree. The title of the article is misleading. They are actually saying don't slide though life blithely, but lead a responsible life and get involved with others. For me that leads to cheerfulness. And seriously - don't exercise if you don't like it? They found some people who didn't exercise and "some of them" lived long. OK - big surprise! How much longer would they live if they did stay active?

Move along - nothing to read here.

If so, I'll live a long, long time, much to the dismay of all those around me...

This study isn't new at all. WE all realized and learned this early in life. The cheery and happy may seem like they should live longer but we as children had an example just the opposite. let me ask you who was the oldest? The Grinch or the cheery happy people in the village? The Grinch was much older and you notice that once he went over to the cheery side we never heard from him again. Let the real Grinch in all of us prevail as we live to 110. Like the Grinch let us gather together and take health care and financial support from all of those wanna be happy seniors and let our collective misery enable us to out live them all.

Just kidding

But your also assuming that cheery people are not handling the important things well. In my experience it is often a case of less cheery people overwhemed by the same task or for being in the problems they are. Most people I know who handle lifes problems well and on time also are the most cheery because of it.I thnik the confusion is more one of cheery verus illresponsibilty.
