Are you drinking more now in retirement than during your working years? I like to keep my brain function going, so a glass of wine per day should be a positive, besides I love wine. Going out with friends, knowing I do not have to get up early in the morning I indulge a bit more.
So I guess my intake has increased a bit but not a lot.
We don't drink at all so the answer is no. Years ago when my grandmother was alive, she knew of many unmarried alcoholics in their 70's and 80's so I think alcoholism among older single people may be higher, don't know.
No. I drank more when I used to have to go on business trips and everyone would meet at the hotel bar after work. Now I'm too busy. There is a single can of Miller's Lite in the frig and it's been there for at least two months.

As I got older and now suffer the ills and pains of age, alcohol is not for me. I take increasing medications for pain and other ailments and it is dangerous to use alcohol with these medications.
I was never a heavy drinker. I always looked at wine and beer as a food that adds to the enjoyment of dining--so it was also with food that I mostly used alcohol. I never believed in the over comsumption of any alcohol to the point of inebriation, especially high-proof spirits. I do miss beer and wine with my foods but it is not necessary. So, it is not really difficult for me to give up alcohol. I am sure there are other seniors who have the same issue with medications and have stopped using alcohol.
I quit drinking .... it was either '97 or '98. I had started drinking in college - upstate New York, when the drinking age was 18. And I liked it - perhaps a bit too much.
Like work, I thought I'd miss drinking. I was wrong on both counts.
Nope, my alcohol consumption has decreased. I find, as I add years, that it takes less alcohol to make me feel mellow...and I don't like the feeling of being more than mellow. Guess you might call me a cheap date these days. Two glasses of wine or two beer are my max, with one of each more the norm. And sometimes a week or two will pass with no alcohol consumed at all. Love my water, though...
