I didn't say all--I meant it as 'Americans as a culture.' We are obsessed with outer things, outer symbols of attractiveness and sexiness, fed to us by the media, on which we seem ultra dependent. It was not meant as a criticism (we are a material culture, after all) so much as an observation shared by many. Many of us (esp women) strive to dress to impress, with makeup and push-up undergarments, etc, and lack the faintest notion of projecting real inner sexiness (not something one can learn).

Thanks for the clarification. I think what you are saying is especially true of young people - young, insecure or at least immature people. I think when I was younger, I did obsess about what I wore, how my hair looked, etc.....now I just want to look, clean, smell good and look put together in an age appropriate way (and I want to get to that point in no longer than 30 minutes).

I still care about the way I look but it is something I think about for about 10 minutes in the morning while I'm getting ready for the day and about 5 minutes at night when I take care of my skin before I go to bed - my life is so not about me at this stage of the game.

I definitely don't want to be one of those 60 something women who try to cling to their youth by displaying an overabundance of makeup, age spotted skin, passe styled hair and age-inappropriate clothing. I also don't want to just give up - no makeup, no skin care, throw on any old thing....that would be the beginning of the end for me.

Anyone dealing with health issues are bound to become depressed & anxious at times. Especially if they come on to you out of the blue.

Sadly, our society is hung up on age. I have known people who freaked out when they tuned 30. As I am sure you have been told, 70 is not old. Read & learn about people who are living or have lived fulfilled lives after the age of 70. To name a few: Grandma Moses after experiencing severe arthritis in her fingers and hands had to give up her needlework but decided to learn how to paint. George Burns experienced a surge in his career after the age of 80. Betty White & Tony Bennett are still very much in demand. Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin & Carole King are nearing 70 but still continue to make music.

There are millions of ordinary people in their 70's who are enjoying life while giving back to society, if that is their mission. You can do the same.

You live in a beautiful state, especially this time of year. You do not have to get on a flight to experience the beauty that surrounds you. Absorb it all everyday because it will make you feel better. Also, try to be grateful of the positives that came out of your health challenges. You probably know how devastating diabetes can be, so to be free from that disease is a true blessing. Not to mention the benefits you will experience from the weight loss. At this time, try and concentrate on regaining your full health.

I don't mean to be preachy, but you do have a lot of living to do.

Hate to say this, but many of the European countries I have been too are MORE obsessed with how women look as are the women themselves; hence you will not see them going out looking like most Americans do. In Belgrade, most of the women dress, on an everyday basis, in what I call "Porn chic"!

Can you clarify what I bolded as I am getting mixed messages in my lil ole brain! TO me, only the thing listed that would make a woman look like she is clinging to her youth is the inappropriate clothing (which I am trying to figure out as to WHEN something is no longer age-appropriate), as youth as a rule, does not wear a lot of makeup nor does it have age spots nor passe hair styles.

But with that said, I am WITH YOU with your sentences after that!

How sweet woman??? I think part of my "denial" does lie in the fact that I don't want to lose my sexuality.... so, I am questioning everything.
