yeah, me too. Portland and maybe Winchester, VA because that area is really growing so it has more to offer now than even five years ago.

My requirements are
1. A VA Medical Center (not Clinic)
2. A military base

None of these make my list

Brunswick Maine? (Naval, but not sure how active the base is). Great northern town to retire in, lifestyle, ocean, Bowdoin College, close to Portland.

I hardly consider Portland an affordable destination for retirement, not so close to Boston (which is certainly unaffordable).
I believe the Brunswick base closed down or is in the middle of doing so. There is very little military presence left in New England (I live near the former Fort Devens).

Is there a VA Hospital there?

I noticed on the AARP list was Cheyenne. I understand Cheyenne has a population of about 60,000 and its very windy there. Also, the winters can be brutal. Tremendous potential there. My kind of city!

I assume most of these lists are done by 1st year journalism students who have never been to any of the places they are rating

I lived 30 minutes from Harrisburg, PA as a kid and when I went to college. It would be a place that I would have no interest in retiring to.

Now Portland...maybe. But up the coast more would be more fun.

Consider Variations on a theme.

San Antonio, Sheridan, WY, and Bremerton, WA come immediately to mind (just the few I know). I'm think'n Tuscon would be your closest spot (IIRC, you have relocated from a 'less desirable', to get to SV) I was just there, but as much as I hate the rain in PNW, I like to fly too much to be in AZ and not near a major Airport. I certainly could not tolerate Phoenix. (I don't do stoplights) Currently live 20 minutes from an international Airport (hub) and no stoplights in the entire county.
