The first time I ever had pizza was in Oregon. It was a popular chain which doesn't exist anymore.

I regularly pass by 2 old Shakey buildings that are still pizza places. They must have been bought by the same people ... they took down the sign, added an "R", and they're now known as Sharkey's Pizza
I can't recall the first pizza I ate, but the first one I remember was the thing they called pizza that they served for school lunches. I do remember some good pizzas from local restaurants while growing up and then some chain ones.
I was born in 1950 and my mom used to make us "pizza pie" often. We even had a family joke about it, because my mom as a young wife was afraid of pastry crust and never made us regular fruit pies. One night when we were having pizza my older brother (aged about 4) complained that when we had piece-a-pie at Jimmy's house it had fruit in it! (Mom got over her fear of pastry and makes an excellent pie crust.)

1953 in Edison, NJ a family put in a pizza oven in the addition on their Dairy Delight Ice cream store. It was $.15 a slice or $.90 for a whole large pie.
Lots of places back then advertised it as Tomato Pie.
My first pizza was enjoyed at an U.S.A.F Base in England called R.AF.Alconbury, back in the early 60's it was delish. i have never ever tasted one like it since.

Early 1960's. Big Thompson elementary school, between Estes Park and Loveland, Colorado. Jeanne Smith, best school cook on the planet. Pizza with THICK crust (over 1 inch thick) I can still taste it, yum.
Very small school had to file downstairs to get trays, then trek 3 flights of steps back to room to eat.
The school Principle would stand guard as you brought your tray back EMPTY was a requirement, or you marched right back to the room to eat. No hiding stuff in milk cartons, we had glass bottles !. You best not drop your tray full of food while traipsing up and down the slick (and well worn) wooden steps. Getting a brisk paddle was the order of many a day (for troublemakers)

Haven't seen a Shakey's in years...or a Sharkey's either. Around here it's Pizza Hut and Papa John's. Don't know what happened to Domino's but they seem to have vanished from my town too!
