I am using this chat thread to respond to an unsigned rep comment in the hopes that the person who repped me may possibly read this. And no, it was not a negative comment at all; it was quite positive, saying that the poster had gotten a chuckle out of my new "status" designation and liked it, and also felt the same way him (or her-) self.

First, thanks. It's always nice to receive compliments. The explanation that I wanted to give has to do with the genesis of my new "status". I had used my original status ("Fan of the Los Angeles Master Chorale") for over three years, ever since joining City-Data, and I had no plans to change it. However the receipt of a hostile attack remark clearly aimed at me ("Some people will never grow up.") caused me to think that hey, I can just adopt that description and wear it as a badge of pride. So I did.

Some posters have demonstrated a clever sense of humor in the status and/or location designations. I remember some years ago the following location: "At the end of my rope!" Can't remember the user name, but I did enjoy it.

How do all of you view your status comment? Many have something flippant, such as my current one about never growing up, and many have something serious and significant about themselves, such as my former one (to which I will probably eventually go back).

It took me a long while to figure out what you're talking about. I didn't know about status comments so haven't ever noticed them. I don't have the faintest idea how to create one, am curious to see responses to your query. If others read them and care then I'm flummoxed, not an unusual state for me.

Edit: I've figured out how to do them, am awaiting upon responses to decide if I want to craft one. The Retirement forum is the only one I care about stuff like this.

Don't feel bad, biscuitmom. I don't even know how to start a thread! It isn't explained anywhere and I've tried to figure it out but can't. All I can do is a quick reply like this!

Easy: First, you must be at a forum index (table of contents?), not inside a thread like we are now. Then look near the upper right hand corner for "Forum Tools". Click on that and a drop-down menu appears, one item of which is "Post a new thread". Click on that and it becomes like doing a quick reply - just be sure to include a title.

I should have assumed a further explanation would be helpful. Sorry. The status line is in such small and faint type that it does not stand out at all and is so easily overlooked. For others who may still be looking, it is on the upper left when we reply to a thread; underneath our user name is the listing "senior member" and under that the "status" if we have bothered to enter one. To do that, we have to go to our own profile area, probably under "settings".

Thank you, Escort Rider!! I found it by following your instructions! You have made my day...come to think of it, your posts often do that!

After a long spell of bewilderment I found and clicked on the field under my user name, it gave an Edit prompt, I clicked on it and created a status. I edited my status, am still bewildered why anyone cares. Does anyone, and why?

Well, the above is an excellent answer to the question I included with my post ("How do we all view our status line?"). With absolute indifference, is your answer. I do agree it's a matter of no real importance. It's just an opportunity to say something about ourselves which always appears with our user name when we post, if we care to make use of it.

Like I said, it's not very noticeable. But at least one person noticed mine and commented on it; I felt frustrated because I didn't know who that person was and wanted to reply to him or her.

If almost everyone else, like you, doesn't care and is bewildered why anyone would, I've got my answer.

My status comment is pure Pollyanna....but it does reflect what I feel and hope to feel everyday....or at least most days although I doubt it will give anyone a chuckle.

As I recall, the original idea for the status line was that posters would update it daily or maybe throughout the day, sharing what was new with them. I think the idea was to keep the chat out of threads. For example, you might say "Finally bought a house" "Just saw Star Wars, what a great movie" or "Out of town and won't be posting for a week".

But, that idea didn't really take hold. Instead people mostly use it to say something that describes themselves. Or, they use it to make some sort of mild passive-aggressive attack at a fellow poster or state their political POV. And more often not people just don't post anything there anymore.

Like biscuitmom, I've taken to not looking at the "poster information" part of the posts anymore. Not that I object to what people post there, but more because there's so much clutter on the pages that the only way I can read this forum these days is to block out everything but the actual comments. Really wish they would go back to the original clean & uncluttered look. Especially hate all the stuff in the margins--very annoying to have to close 4-5 windows every time I log in. Oh well, at least we don't have those annoying signatures at the bottom of people's posts. When I go on other forums, those drive me up the wall. Why forums can't just keep it simple is a mystery to me.
