Sodium and salt are not the same thing. You can find out about the difference in nutrition books. The balance of sodium and potassium is very important, so we shouldn't think in terms of avoidance but in terms of balance.
I think most folks know that sodium and salt are not the same thing. (But maybe not? )
Nevertheless, salt is also essential to life.

Actually I've read that many people do not know that. They think they are one and the same.
Here is an interesting quote from Dr. McDougall's website. The footnoted references appear at the bottom of the article.
"....Research Says Low Sodium Can Be Unhealthy
Quote from the British Medical Journal (2002)—reference 3
“Lowering sodium intake may have adverse effects on vascular endothelium through stimulation of the renin-angiotensin system and on serum total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. In cohort studies, lower salt intake in people with hypertension has been associated with higher levels of cardiovascular disease and in general populations with greater all cause mortality.”
Quote about the NHANES III study from the Journal of General Internal Medicine (2008)—reference 4
“Observed associations of lower sodium with higher mortality were modest and mostly not statistically significant. However, these findings also suggest that for the general US adult population, higher sodium is unlikely to be independently associated with higher CVD or all-cause mortality.” ——"

Salt is sodium-cloride (NaCl), that is, one atom of sodium (Na) and one atom of cloride (Cl) combine to make one molecule of sodium-cloride (salt). The main sorce of sodium for the body is indeed salt, so while they are not the same thing, in effect they might as well be.

OMG. I think I'm peddling backward. I just now wanted to look up something I posted (I guessed) 5 years ago on CD and in those posts I found myself doing what? Cleaning out!!! I was doing so well back then because I was getting ready to sell my suburban house...supercharged and organized. Here it is five years later and I'm at it again, having bought a larger property because of the much better location. Now I'm thinking about that final move to a small place in another 5 years. Just have to say that these past five years went by at lightning speed, just cannot believe it. Sometimes I wonder whether most of us really make any progress at all, lol. I doubt that I am. But then again, I'm usually seeking improvement of one kind or another. And, the grass is greener here than where I was, so I have to hope my next and final place is even greener (). (But where did all the accumulated stuff come from? I don't remember buying anything....)
I think Weight Watchers is a great idea but there are too many choices. For most folks, I think they like that. For me, I just want to know that I can eat xx items at each meal and that's that. I hate the thought of giving up my pastries for the rest of my life, but I have learned that I maintain my weight just fine as long as I run from bread. Once I lose the weight I need to dump, I am going to have to face that pastries and breads are just not something I can indulge in very often. For a person who loves sandwiches . . . this is sad!!!!
I recently re-joined Weight Watchers - it's being offered at work and we get eTools for free. Reimbursed 75% as well. How could I not? I've lost 45 pounds a couple of years ago with WW.... but the stresses of life interfere and time passes and 30 pounds are back.
I simply cannot do drastic diets that tell me what I can and cannot eat. For me it's about the portion control. And yes, thanks to my Wisconsin heritage - I am a cheese-aholic. I would eat cheese and bread before any sweets. I will NEVER give it up.
On WW for 3 weeks and I'm down 5 pounds. 25 more to go.
The key for me - is the ease of the eTools and journaling. eTools for those not in the Weight Watchers at work is something like $18 a month. Which is cost prohibitive for me. I am so much more likely to journal online rather than on a piece of paper.
I also have taken up weight lifting and have way more energy than ever before.

I hope it works this time as well.
I believe your bolded statement is my quote.
I have several friends who have done very well on WW over the years - and I am going back 30 years when I say that.
Congratulations on your weight loss! I agree - if someone is subsidizing it, why not go for it? For me, personally, I have looked at all the material - even bought a cookbook years ago that I have used many times simply b/c the recipes are healthy. When I say years ago - I am meaning - in the early 80s. One of my friend lost 30 or so pounds in the early 90s working with WW, and she gave me a recipe for a broccoli soup that she called her "salvation soup," lol (love that!!!). I think WW is a wonderful program.
That being said, all the adding up of points, etc. is not my thing. I don't want a gazillion choices. I want to know I can eat certain things x times a day or week . . . and that's that. I am most likely not representative of most folks, who say they get bored on a "diet." It is wonderful there are choices for everyone.
One of our posters, TUBORG, suggested a fitness app and I dl'd it. I am very pleased w/ that process, as now I can plan out what I will eat repeatedly, as I have this down to a science now. If that means I discover that eating a broiled chicken breast with salsa 3 days a week for lunch and the other 4 days I can eat a tuna salad w/ lettuce, then I will go buy the groceries and happily eat that. In fact, if I need to eat that for the rest of my life to maintain my weight, that is fine with me.
My method may not work for anyone else and I am certainly no advocate for any plan, as that is an individual decision.
As far as WW, if you stumble upon that broccoli soup recipe, please post it! I would love to have it and have lost it!
And good luck with WW -- it is a very respectable program with years of success behind it.
Julia Childe ate butter, cream, and all sorts of wonderful things; she died shortly before her 92nd birthday. She ate in moderation; that's what makes the difference. No one needs diet foods; no one needs computer programs to calculate healthiness. Common sense still works very well.

Glad I could be of help. One of the most important things about the app I suggested is it's name. My Fitness PAL It is just that your pal your confidant. You can partner with others and share your daily updates but it is your world to monitor and enjoy if that is what you want. That is what makes it great if you want that to be your only pal it can be that and you can shut out the outsize noise that is negative and really not designed or inclined to be positive and helpful. You made note of that previously so enjoy your PAL as millions of others are. My son the fitness freak turned me on to it and we share our daily updates and it is fun. He uses it religiously and has virtually no body fat and works out as much as he can now that he is a dad and usually gets to the gym each week day. He tries to keep his weight in a five pound range either way and his favorite non family activity is eating. When he gets to do that with family and friends he really enjoys it. His wife uses it also along with friends of theirs. He might eat 5,000 calories one day and 1600 another. He adjusts his eating along with with his workout to gain or lose as targeted. Since he is a software engineer his use of data is a natural. Not for everyone but glad it was for you and that is what is most important you!.
