Changing the subject, I sometimes enjoy having a little fun on City-Data, such as my post #48 in this thread about using public buses to save money:

Has Your Frugality Taken You To Using Public Buses?

I know I am not alone - Mathjak in particular comes up with some fantastic humor. That can sometimes get us in trouble, of course. In our own Retirement Forum, there is a thread about coping with losing one's looks. Some months ago I posted there, "Some people should be more concerned with losing their marbles than losing their looks". That was the entirety of the post - no individual was singled out, nor was I responding to any particular post. But did I ever get a vicious personal attack by name in return! That has to be considered as part of the fun.

Not everyone on here has a great sense of humor, so it's a shame that happened to you ER. Losing your looks is far more serious any day than losing your marbles. JMHO

Mathjak generally, best I remember, pokes fun at himself. And he's funny.

The thread about coping with losing your looks has ranged far afield from the original post. Go back and read the first couple of pages. You might understand why your joke could be judged as being in poor taste. The lady, I always think of her as the purple poster, hasn't been around for awhile. I hope her life is on the upswing.

sorry... I forgot to quote

If you lose your marbles you won't think about your looks, lol.

I took your advice and re-read the first two pages of the thread. However, that re-reading failed to make me understand why my joke would be judged as being in poor taste. Perhaps you can enlighten me. Is it because the OP was genuinely upset about losing her looks? Some grimly serious folks just don't like jokes.

Certain subjects - for example the death of a loved one or being diagnosed with a serious disease - are not suitable material for joking around, and I would NEVER entertain the thought of doing so. Are you saying that the subject matter of that tread is in that same "too tragic for humor" category? If so, we will just have to agree to disagree.

Or perhaps some people just don't think others are as funny as they think they are.

hahaha. I haven't kept up with this thread so I don't mean it against anyone in particular but on some threads the bathroom "humor" or the junior high level humor is pretty stupid. Also the sexist non humor (anti female jokes that were in style back in the '50s or so) is kind of offensive to a lot of women.

ER, your humor is humorous to me--so far anyway. I have no idea what you said to offend that person. Some people are easily offended and some people have every right to be offended--just saying that because we don't know what has happened in their lives that made them so sensitive and easily offended. We all probably have buttons that could be pushed even when no offense was intended.

Meo, ER and I have a history of disagreeing over what's funny..... most likely because I'm an inbred morbidly obese southerner who woke up one morning a few years ago with a goiter the size of a grapefruit. I won't mention my progeny here.

The thread about losing your looks was one of a few that the OP wrote around the same time. It meandered off into a conversation about aging. I admit that some of what I knew from the other threads fueled my irritation.
