She had talked about going to CA with some friends and renting a place - not sure when or how long.

Well, I didn't know that, so maybe that's the real reason. I was only going by her own statements as I explained.

Posters often come and go on CD. Sometimes it is good to take a break away from online posting, and from the computer in general. It is a great help in the shut-in months for sure. Often posters return after being gone awhile, as in the Women Retiring Alone sticky thread.

I read what Caladium wrote on that thread and it didn't appear to me she was upset or planning to leave CD (unless I missed a post). She has never entered any of the contests so she has no "skin in the game" so to speak. I feel the same way. I have never entered so who wins and how the results are compiled are of no concern to me, although it does make me happy to see a poster I know and like has won some $$$$.

I take sabbaticals from CD every so often myself - one time for about 9 months, other times for 3-6 months. Just depends what else is going on in my life and the demands on my time.

I always worry when I don't see posts from a longtime member. I wonder if they (or a family member) have been dealing with a medical crisis.

Here is a copy and paste of Caladium's own words; it is the entirety of her post #35 in the thread "Original posts and replies by the original poster now appear over green background" in the "About the Forum" forum. Thread is currently on page two of that forum.

"The little oval saying "original poster" is a good solution. To be honest it doesn't thrill me but if other people like it, I'm ok with it. However, I do NOT like seeing a big red obnoxious oval bragging that certain people won money. Don't like that at all. Seriously, I really dislike it. There are some people who won that really anger me. I thought they pulled a scam, but I chose to "take the high road" and look the other way--but part of taking that high road was that I could ignore it. If I have to have their prize rubbed in my face I'm not sure I'm interested in being on city-data anymore. I'm serious when I say this--I don't see what good this notation does and I can see how it could cause a lot of anger."

The bolding is mine, because it illustrates the point I have been talking about.
Edited to add: The date of Caladium's post quoted above is March 9, 2013. Checking "Find all posts by Caladium" after clicking on her user name yields the information that March 9, 2013 was the last day she posted on City-Data.

I'm not sure what point you are making. I'm also not sure it's a good idea to bring up a poster's former posts in this context. Everyone has the opportunity to express his or her feelings about a CD policy, but I personally would not want to venture into a public airing of my views of another poster. It isn't constructive, imho. But perhaps I am missing a point you are trying to make.

It may not be a matter of that. Some people are quite visual, as I am. Signs and symbols and graphics take on a much larger visual impact for many of us. I was really turned off by the new identifier buttons myself, as they are "in your face" and distracting from the text of the posts. A tiny discrete "OP" symbol in black and white would suffice to remind us who the OP was. As for the "winner" button, it gets old after awhile and if a poster has won more than once, it could make some people feel why bother to enter the contest, it might seem to them like a popularity contest. That said, there may be other ways to see the winners without having to see it every single time you see a winner's post. If that irritated Caladium, I cannot say that I entirely disagree with her.

Default Please don't put words in my mouth.

I did not air "my views of another poster". Where do you get that? Please go back and re-read my post. I let Caladium speak entirely for herself in her own words without commentary one way or the other by me.

When a regular announces her own departure, that is "news" to us other regulars. That is all. Perhaps Caladium will be back this very day or perhaps never, but she has been gone for three weeks, which is highly unusual for her. I'm not sure what point you are making.

I believe Escort Rider's conclusion, also.

It makes sense to me.

I can totally understand that as well, NEG.

I just hope everything is okay with Caladium and her hubby. Folks can get sick or have an accident and unless they have another friend IRL who also posts here, we just wouldn't know what happened.
