Let my dogs out last night at 9 to go pee, my Blue Healer came back first, looked at me went into his corner and let out a groan. My goofy Australian Shepherd came back a few minutes later. I opened the patio door and UGH, he was sprayed by a skunk. It was 15 degrees last night so he couldn't sleep outside, and I made a bath of hydrogen peroxide, Dawn dishsoap, and baking soda. Just what I wanted to do on a late Sunday night. Got the smell off after an hour of bathing him, well mostly.

Luckily I had a new bottle of Fabrize I sprayed the house with. Guess there will be skunk hunting tonight with my .22 rifle.

UGH.

Oh leave the little skunk alone. She was just protecting herself! It's also bad luck to harm a skunk.

I don't hate them but they are notorious for carrying contagious and infections diseases so I don't want them anywhere near.

Google "natural repellants skunks." Probably not allowed to name brand names here but there are many methods that are safe and keep these critters away without killing them.

Jim - I agree, leave the skunk alone.

As posted by biscuitmom: I don't hate them but they are notorious for carrying contagious and infections diseases so I don't want them anywhere near.

We've had a huge problem with skunks in my neighborhood. We're between (not on) a golf course and a nature preserve with a creek so they have their "skunk freeway" between the two. So far my dog hasn't been in the line of fire, fortunately. But that could change because the skunks are burrowing under fences to get to fruit trees, pet food left out, and such.

So . . . one neighbor whose dog was skunked four times in its own backyard dug down a couple of feet around the inside of his fence line and buried welded wire fencing - pasture-type fencing. Then he covered those areas with large river cobblestones. It seems to be working.

The county trapper has located Have-A-Heart traps strategically around the neighborhood with the intention of relocating the skunks. Which sounds good, except that there are some homeowners who have tripped the traps so that the skunks won't be caught. I wonder if those people realize that skunks are carriers of rabies?

Biscuitmom is right - and a skunk seen in broad daylight is probably sick. A call to Animal Control is in order. Skunks are nocturnal and should never be out wandering around (especially in circles) during daylight.

Skunks come looking for food—trash cans, compost heaps, dogfood left outdoors, etc.

You can train a skunk for a pet. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ucgp-GzcE8

The great horned owl is the skunk's only predator, fyi.

AZBrat: Is your job in danger? Certainly hope not. I don't think AZ is closing any Walmarts but I don't know for sure. Thought about you when I heard that on the news.

Since I posted that I've seen two more of the five nominations for best foreign film, "Son of Saul" (Hungary) and "Mustang" (France). Both excellent. "Mustang" is a French entry because of French financing and a mostly French production crew, but it is in Turkish with an all Turkish cast, filmed (as far as I could tell) in Turkey.

I will have to wait a bit to see "Embrace of the Serpent" (Colombia) and "A War" (Denmark) until they open in Los Angeles.
