I go back to 2007 (I think) and can't believe some of the things I posted years back. It's like keeping a 10-year diary online. I feel that some long-gone posters are not missed (by me) and others I do miss. In the Maine forum I miss Island Mermaid. Others include Knoxgarden, from Knoxville. Seems like way back then there was a lot of camaraderie among women retirees, a lot of personal stuff posted online that wouldn't be revealed today. Male posters, I think, were posting more about financial aspects of retirement.
Retirement issues are universally mostly the same, in 3 basic categories: where to relocate to be happier and/or reduce COL, what to do with leisure time, financial decisions. There's lots of trivia and chat in between, which is what builds the sense of online community. A few posters I have no clue about, even their gender or location. I've never had more than 3 or 4 posters on ignore, out of so many who post. I appreciate CD for allowing such a broad range of subject matter and the posters who keep coming back to post.
I actually joined CD back in 2007 but then, for some reason, didn't come back for a long time hence my join date is 2009. I forgot my user name/password for that account but have seen a few posts I made way back then.
I miss Gandalara...I think that's how she spelled it. She hasn't been around since June 2015 and I still wonder what happened to her. Just disappeared. I've never put anyone on ignore but there are a few that I still wonder about their gender.

And how about Caladium, who hasn't posted on City-Data in two and a half years? In her last post she announced that she was taking a little break from City-Data but that she would be back. A prolific (complusive?) poster, one of the most active people around, until she wasn't.

Yes, another one! If I looked at my friends list I'd probably see a few that aren't around anymore.

I really think once you break the spell - it's like any other addiction - sad to label it that way but that's what it is. These people have found other ways to spend their time.

Was Gandalara that tough farm lady who raised chickens and was pretty self-sufficient?

The name sounds familiar to me. I just did a quick search on her name but nothing came up, although I didn't go way back. ETA: I found her last post. It was in June, 2013.

Your description sounds more like SCGranny, another disappeared one, who lived in Nebraska but was tough as nails. It is possible that Gandalara also raised chickens, but she lived in California, not in the metro areas but out in the boonies somewhere.
