As this is a chat thread, no topic should be off limits. In fact, that is the purpose of designating a specific thread as a chat thread; so that people can discuss topics that would otherwise be considered off-topic on a particular forum. (At least that's how it works on other C/D boards in which I participate.)
It wasn't the topic I was questioning, but whether discussing specific makes would qualify as some strange offshoot of "advertising." Now that I think about it, it shouldn't.

I was just now reading the local obits and saw to my shock and sadness that a colleague of mine, a fine writer my age, passed away in Sept. She looked like she was 45; she was vibrant and incredibly accomplished. How could she possibly have been 64. This is the third writer friend of mine of the same age who has passed from this earth in the last 3 years.
It's funny to be looking ahead 10 or 15 years, planning or worrying about this or that. Your two quotes, above, certainly prove that. Perhaps I should calm down about how long a new car should last. It may outlast me!

Well then on your way to Asheville swing by Floyd and we'll go flat-footin' on a Friday night at the Country Store.
I bought a brand-new Mazda Speed 3 six years ago and have loved every minute driving it. This is probably irrelevant to Umbria's choice because her model (an SUV) and mine (a smaller, very sporty car) are as different as night and day. Mine is turbo charged and its top speed is supposed to be 155 mph, although I've never driven it faster than 125. It has a six-speed manual transmission and factory tricked out brakes and suspension. Apart from a rather vicious torque-steer at very low speeds (being front-wheel drive), the handling is superb; this car is a total joy on curvy mountain roads.
But it is also very practical, being a five-passenger hatchback. Summer before last (summer of 2012) I took a road trip in it with the approximate itinerary of Los Angeles, El Paso, Austin (Texas), Galveston, New Orleans, Little Rock, Kansas City, Denver, and home to Los Angeles. Visited friends and relatives, museums, etc. and had a wonderful time.
I have also taken other road trips with my Mazda and have always found it such a great joy.
