The personal weather station that's closest to me listed on Weather Underground says it's now 3.9 degrees with 13 mile an hour winds out of the NW, making it feel like -13.
Drip, drip, drop little open faucets - at least so long as the power stays on.
Around here cattle, sheep, goats and horses generally remain outdoors year round and many have nowhere to get out of the wind beyond whatever cover the trees may provide. I wonder how they will all fare overnight. I tried to get my goat to come into the yard but he remained across the creek with the horses and I can't get to him to put him on a lead and force him over here. I would have put him in one of the 10 x 10 dog runs in the equipment shed, not great protection but better than totally exposed. He does have a big dog house down below the pond and so it is somewhat out of the wind but I don't know if he'll decide to use it.
Where's our poster who loves to regale us with how Marquette is the perfect retirement locale? As I write this, the current temperature there is 14 below zero, after hitting a "high" today of 11 below, lol. It's currently 73 here in Miami Beach and hit a high of 84 earlier this afternoon. That "arctic" air will finally reach us later tonight and our high tomorrow will only be in the low 60s. But never fear, we'll be back to the mid 70s the following day and then 80 by Friday.
Let's see, -14 or +84. Hmmmm. Tough decision.
I will remember you this summer.
My furnace doesn't usually run that often - good insulation & excellent windows. It has run nearly nonstop for a couple days. Wait til I get the bill.
Last Saturday our governor closed all schools for today - this is a first in my life time that schools have been closed due to "cold". Schools are rarely closed for any reason.
It is now - 14F with a low tonight of -20F. Our high was -12F. Exposed skin will freeze in 4-5 minutes. This is just nuts. I'm getting cabin fever~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK - Friday it will be 30F - heat wave. People will be running around naked.
That wind map IS cool! It was also interesting to go into the gallery of "Winds Past"...and to see what was going on when Hurricane Sandy was thrashing the East Coast. Thanks for posting!

We often read of hundreds or thousands who die in a tsunami or hurricane. We hear of vagrants who freeze to death during the winter. But heat-related deaths constitute more than half of all weather realted deaths. We're far safer in our temperate homes than in the heat. Humid heat is worse because that can cause the body to stop sweating after a period of humidity. Then it's heat stroke time.
Cody is now registering 39. My calibrated thermometer in the canyon west where I live is at 46.
Try to get me to move.
Since NEG posted a song I'll edit and do the same.
I just retuned from the grocery store and while I was loading my car a man who was parked next to me came out and was wearing a sweatshirt - no coat. I said the obvious "You have no coat!!!" - he said: "We're having a heat wave - it's 4F (above zero)." I said it before - when it hits 30F on Friday they'll be running around nakid.
