When my Dad passed unexpectedly two years ago and then my aunt in April I have had a crash course in 'life is too short'. Learn the lessons these folks leave you, they are priceless.

Ani - Sorry to hear about your aunt - she sounds like she lived a rich life.
I know what you mean about seeing relatives and realizing just how much older we all are. This happened at my mom's funeral - all the childhood memories. It's even stranger when you are in a group of cousins that spent a lot of time together as children and some have many memories of those days and some claim to have absolutely none - like they wiped the slate clean. Very odd.
Oh, yes, I do know what you mean about the "forgotten memories" syndrome. Actually, that has occurred more with one of my sisters than my cousins.
What made me feel so odd today . . . the cousin I "grew up with" and spent the most time with til we were about high school age (and moved further from one another) -- she and I have really not had that much in common over the years and have hardly spent ANY time together for about 35 years. We had very different lives . . . as we grew older, we had so little in common as far as interests and pursuits. I saw her today and had this overwhelming feeling of sisterly love for her. I don't even know how to describe it. There was a wisdom and depth in her face, an inner light -- I just felt a yearning to get to know her again, discover who this woman had become!
I told her - "oh my -- is it just me or do you feel like the years just melted away and we were five years old again, sitting side by side on that church pew?" She said - "Strange - I was just thinking the same thing." She has recently moved and with my upcoming move, we will only be about 35 mins from one another and I look forward to reconnecting.
Thank you CC! It was a good "Celebration of Life" that we had today. My Aunt was a positive influence in my life and I will always treasure the special memories of her. This was hubby's first occasion to get out with a group in public. So it was really nice that he could be with my family - he likes my cousins very much. He loved my Aunt and she was very fond of him, as well. Funerals can be difficult to get through but this was different . . . my Aunt passed peacefully and she was ready to go. And we all knew it was time to let her go.

Fate - you may have a guardian angel (maybe your aunt) directing that whole encounter - and future encounters. I hope it works out for you.
This morning when I woke up I had a dreadful feeling that there had been a bad earthquake in the Bay Area. then thought to myself that maybe I had a dream about it because I'm reading a book set in San Francisco and also I'd spent so time yesterday reminiscing about a back packing trip in Kings Canyon many years ago so the old home place was in my thoughts.
Then I went to the SF-Oakland forum and read that they had a 6.0 in American Canyon, which is between Napa and Vallejo. It wasn't catastrophic but it's not tiny either. I sure hope that it is not a foreshock with something larger coming in the near future.
So sad, my aunt who I had no relationship with passed in April. I went to her house to collect her car and some belongings that my other aunt wanted me to ship. I also adopted her cat, whose naame is the Diplomat.
While packing her stuff I got a glimpse into what was a very intelligent and disciplined woman. Which leaves me to wonder what our relationship could have been. For twenty years we were only four hours away.......

I grew up with 4 cousins, families lived within 20 miles of each other. All 5 of us girls were within 4 years. Almost every time we got together, we would get lined up so a picture could be taken.
The last time we were all in the same room together in 2013, my aunt tried to line us up again.
Sez Aunt, "Oh, we have to get a picture of the "girls"!"
