I was told early on that you should count to yourself "1001, 1002, 1003," before pulling out into an intersection after the light has turned green. Can save a life that way.
We have a wifi thermostat that we keep an eye on and a service contract with a local heating/plumbing company that is two blocks away. They have a key to the house in case of an emergency. The neighbors have our snowblower with our blessings in exchange for keeping the walkway to the front door cleared of snow so people can get in the house if needed.
Draining the pipes and turning the heat completely off is extreme and I was told under a certain temp ceramic tiles can pop etc. I honestly don't know, I've heard it's okay either way from different sources. This company recommended replacing the water in our radiators/pipes with anti-freeze and an overflow valve installed, in the event of a power outage, the pipes won't freeze/burst that way. We may do that next year, we ran out of time and DH wants to research that more. We do drain the toilets and put antifreeze in and Saran Wrap over the bowls, that worked well last year. We shut the water off to the entire house, draining outside spigots.
And two wifi cameras to keep an eye on things, probably not needed but we don't feel like we are blind. The neighbor across the street is an FBI agent and nothing gets missed by him and the neighbor next door yelled at another neighbor who was checking around the house making sure things are okay. So we are covered there.
The only trouble we had was with lawn service who said they did what they were suppose to and our neighbor who said no they didn't, it's mainly leaf pick up. We hired a different company this year. And now I can see if the job is getting done.
I've never heard "hun" up here out of context of being an oldster. No one would call a hot young chick "hun" or "dear." It's considered patronizing, a sign of age. I remain offended.
We lived so long on our own and away from everyone that it's great to be near family again. I could be in FL, NY or even back in IN and call it paradise; it's only a state of mind, not a real place.

Not long ago there was a thread about this in another CD forum. Some were offended, most were not. Since then I've paid attention to how often it happens at work. I find myself doing it now and then but nobody seems to mind. I notice I have customers calling me 'endearing' names...well, I don't really consider them that, but just 'words'...and it doesn't offend me. I've decided that they do it because they actually LIKE me and I've yet to feel they were being condescending, patronizing or anything like that. Maybe it's in the "tone", I dunno. Cripes, I've worked with the public for over 50 years so it takes a lot to "offend" me. I probably got called hon, honey or sweetheart half a dozen times today and it was a short shift! lol
Probably I'm not the only one who is always curious whether I will take a big hit with raises in medical costs for a new year. Well, my 2015 evidence of coverage just arrived in the mail and I am happy to report there are basically no increases (a few, counterbalanced by some decreases, with most items remaining the same). I hope it will be a similar story for the rest of you.
The only increase in my plan is for a hospital stay. It's going up from $175 day to $225. That's it! Doctor visits, specialists, prescriptions, etc. all remain the same. I switched my plan last year and I'm so glad I did! My mom stayed with AARP-United Healthcare and has had so many problems it's unreal.
