To poster NYgal2NC: Several years ago, did you used to post on City-Data under the user name Imcurious? Just curious (pun intended, but question serious).
That was not me. I have been on here since March 2015. I did have a different name at the time but I honestly forgot it and made a new one. But my name has never had "curious" in it.
I have a topic to talk about that may not fit in chat and trust that someone will let me know. It is also a topic that may draw a lot of flack. But it is really important to me and I need to hear what others have to say about it.
I was born in 1942, certainly did not understand anything about the brutality going on in Europe at that time, but do recall a little about rations, black-outs, nylon stockings, etc. Funny how the mind can hang onto things remembered from such a young age.
But I am noticing an awful lot of casual use of the word "nazi". I gasp when I hear people calling someone that, or some variation thereof... soup nazi, etc. How did we get from the reign of terror that existed then to now when it's just another slang word? People may say oh it's just a word. But is it? How do we change the meaning from terror to joke? Why are we forgetting what it meant?
Oh, I'm sure there will be some who will tell me to lighten up. But this is something I can't lighten up about. I am not Jewish and I never lived over there. No one in my family fought the war. But I feel a deep compassion for those who suffered at the hands of Hitler and his cronies.
Opinions?
Soup Nazi comes from Seinfeld - a popular TV show with many Jewish actors, writers, directors. Yep - lighten up. If she gives up that name, I want it.
Yes, she always used to, although she hasn't posted at all on City-Data in quite some time. So I was wondering if she had returned with a changed user name. (We can change our user names by submitting the request to a senior mod).

Did you never hear of Hitler? He and his comrades ran the Nazi party. They gassed, burned, experimented, tortured, buried alive thousands upon thousands of people.
Nazi has generally just become synonymous with mercilessly authoritarian.
I highly doubt your last sentence can be found in the book "How to win friends and influence people"
I am not especially looking for friends. It's the foolishness of people who forget the past. It was an important part of history and will someday occur again because we get too complacent and think everything is a joke.

I think that the problem is that many young people know nothing about the Second World War and the Nazis. I was born in 1953, and had relatives who fought in that war, so I grew up, well, just knowing about it.
There was a programme on the telly when I was a kid called 'All Our Yesterdays.' It literally in each weekly show described the war events that took place during the previous week twenty years before. Even 40 years ago, there was a fascinating series called 'World at War' narrated by Laurence Oliver. This was all prime time tv, when there were few channels.
So, we all back then had good knowledge of the war, and the terrible events. I would imagine many young people today couldn't even tell you what decade the war was fought in. It is what it is sadly. It is a long time ago, and like you say, to some people everything is a joke.

Thank you for writing that. I was starting to wonder if someone would write about it. I have watched a lot of PBS and some of the programs are horrendous. I know younger people today really don't want to think about it..... oh that happened a long time ago...... but I fear it can (will?) happen again and then the joke is over.
