I spent much of the morning with a friend who retired in the past couple of years, in his mid '60's. This man inherited his parent's house in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He tried for a few years to sell it. He finally gave up and took it off the market. Nobody wants to live in that town. The coal mines and factories closed long ago. The glut of housing stock is huge. In 1940 it was a city of 90,000 today it's less than 39,000. He uses the house as a summer second home when he is up there visiting relatives. He complained that they are "giving away" perfectly good houses that were well maintained for almost nothing - $30K, $40K, $50K. Unfortunately for the neighborhood has been "going down hill." What has been happening in several eastern Pennsylvania towns is that poor folks have been priced out of New York City, Connecticut, Jersey City, Newark and Philadelphia ... so these "urban poor" have migrated to the cheap former coal mining towns of Pennsylvania.

Hmmmmm. Someone needs to find a marketing genius. After Detroit imploded, someone started marketing it to young families who could not have afforded a sfh anywhere else. There are some neighborhood success stories in Detroit . .

I finally slept through the night, so I couldn't take my thyroid meds at 3am. Which is good. I took it at 6! I had 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Feel great.
Fell asleep about 1 or so. Waiting for the bad weather to hit. We were supposed to have hail, rain, high winds, maybe tornadoes? Had a cold front coming in. But at 6, it was still 78 degrees! But now we are at 57!

You guys are having a 'heat wave'! It's really COLD here. Yesterday our HIGH was under 50 degrees and it was 30 when I woke up. I don't run the heat at night so it was a tad chilly when I got up but the house warms up fast and my 'fluffy' robe keeps me toasty. I think our high today is supposed to be 60. It's good, as long as the wind isn't blowing. We did have rain for two days but clear skies for the foreseeable future.
I slept well last night too. I think I sleep better if I know I don't HAVE to get up so early. I've been having trouble lately because I can't keep my eyes open past 8:00 and that's way too early to go to bed but, evidently, not "too early" to doze off in my recliner. That means I have trouble going to sleep when I DO get to bed about 10:00 but I sometimes just 'give up' and go to bed at 9:00. THEN I wake up at 3:00!! I hate that! Times like that I think it might be nice to have someone else around to KEEP my awake!
